Back in the good old days – eleven years ago, as the crow flies – the worst offense the Hollywood Foreign Press’ annual Golden Globe Awards had ever committed was in lavishing rhapsodic praise and recognition on the stinker Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie film The Tourist (three – count them Ladies and Gents – three nominations) at the expense of the far more competent remake of True Grit. It was a cardinal sin of cinema right up there with the Oscars awarding a Best Picture statue to Shakespeare in Love, sending the far more powerful film Saving Private Ryan a-packing. These days, the harried members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (or “HFPA” as our more poetic pals at The Hollywood Reporter refers to them as) are probably longing for the halcyon days of The Tourist debacle, as they’ve now been deemed an insensitive and torrid lot whose idea of the word “equity” is ensuring that all of their guests receive carte blanche at their backstage bar. Most film fans are still baffled at the brickbat bouquets leveraged at and against the Golden Globes. Long considered the absolute bellwether for the Oscar ceremony, the Globes always felt like a faster and much looser party than most of their stuck-up brethren, an event to tune in to every year. That has all changed within the last twelve months or so. To paraphrase Eddie Murphy from the evergreen saga that is Beverly Hills Cop: “You outdone your welcome. But it’s been real, it’s been nice. Everybody, party’s over! Millennials f***ed it up for everybody, so let’s just go home.”
Fortunately, we here at Vents still really dig the Golden Globe Awards, even if it may not be politically expedient to admit to such a thing anymore. In keeping with that spirit, we’re happy to smuggle to the front-lines for all of you movie buffs that may still have a sense of humor today’s announcement of the nominations for the best in film and television for 2021, per the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
