“Walker, Texas Ranger” Reboot May Get a Prequel Series from The CW

Time can do funny things. There was a time if asked about the possibility of a spinoff in the form of a prequel for the television series Walker, Texas Ranger – specifically if you’d asked me around 1993 or so when action star Chuck Norris was starring in the original iteration of the show – I would have responded with a baffled ‘What’s a Walker, Texas Ranger?’ Of course nearly thirty years later, I’m a little grayer and maybe, just maybe, slightly wiser and more broad when it comes to my pop culture knowledge. I obviously know in 2021 about Walker, both the original long-running CBS version and the new and reimagined Jared Padalecki (Supernatural, Friday the 13th) model. Heck, I’ve even become a wee bit addicted to the brand-spankin’ new rendition, which makes me at least slightly happy to report today that, per those Texas Two-Step mavens over at the wild corral called The Hollywood Reporter, a prequel series for Walker, Texas Ranger is being touted as a very real thing that may just be decorating all of our respective television sets before too much longer.

According to word ‘round campfire, lead actor of Walker, Texas Ranger Jared Padalecki and the creative gremlins behind this latest version of everyone’s favorite kick-ass no-nonsense ranger are deep in talks to potentially expand their fledgling franchise into prequel territory; because it’s 2021, and why not?

Tentatively entitled Walker: Independence, the prequel series would reportedly be set – Time Jump Alert! –in the 1800s and would focus on Abby Walker and her mission of revenge after her hubby is butchered in front of her own two peepers en route to their exodus to the nigh mythical West. Whilst seeking vengeance in best Kill Bill style, our fearless Abby comes across Hoyt Rawlings (what a name!). Turns out ol’ Hoyt is a rogue with a heart of gold who is on a quest for purpose. What a coincidence! Anyhoo, the ad hoc duo make their way to – wait for the title tie-in – Independence, Texas, forming a sort of surrogate family while dealing with the crazy world around them.

Further news on the proposed prequel is being kept about as quiet as an audience at a Pauly Shore standup routine, but you’d better believe cowboys and cowgals that just as soon as we have any further news on the epic which is Walker: Independence we’ll be passing it on to you. Yee-haw!
