Hello, Sylvia. Greetings and welcome to VENTS! I see you’re building a name for yourself in the art industry. How does it make you feel?
Sylvia: Hi there. Thank you much for the opportunity to speak to you. It makes me feel deeply humble and grateful. It has been a long journey and I feel the time is finally NOW.
Can you tell us more about your latestworks? How are they changing the art scene?
Sylvia: My latest worksare based on personal experiences, but a collective narrative about how we perceive the world, its symbols and “truths”.
I believe that if the collective cannot be part of the art conversation, then we have failed visually in the NOW. I use the virtual world for exhibition purposes, which makes the work accessible, where ever you are. The work does not belong to a time or place, other than right here, right now. The physical form is the starting point. The digital form is the point of connection and unfolding of the collective narrative.
What are the names of your top two works of art?
Sylvia: The latest two works are called, “NOW!” and “EVERYTHING is POSSIBLE!” It excites me in its use of found materials andperceived simplicity. It forms part of a body of work that I am currently working on, as part of a solo exhibition for early 2022.
Do you ever have to cope with criticism and doubters because of the large impact of social media critics?
Sylvia: I have learned to say “THANK YOU!” to criticism and doubters. “Can’t do”, “shouldn’t do” has always been huge drivers. (Laugh.)
What is the best compliment you’ve received from supporters?
Sylvia: “The world needs to see this”, is the best compliment and biggest motivation that I have ever received. There is no looking back, with support like that.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Is it safe to say your art will be known by millions?
Sylvia: The goal is not fame. Success for me is using my talents to the best of my ability and collaborating to make the seemingly IMPOSSIBLE, POSSIBLE.In 10 years from now, I will still be making art. It is what I do. It is the way in which I connect to that which is much bigger than myself.
The collaborative venture, ARTforCHANGE is however a different story. YES, it will reach millions, if not billions of people in the next 10 years. It has the collective power to CHANGE the WORLD. The first collaboration, with drum and base artist, Counterstrika, will be available online, 16 December 2021.
