Why Study Abroad? Here are 10 Main Reasons!

In recent years, more and more people choose to study abroad, which has triggered some people’s thinking – why so many people choose to study abroad? The common reasons are as follows:

  1. You will become more independent

Whether you are traveling abroad for the first time or living alone for the first time, studying abroad will make you independent and self-sufficient. Of course, growth is accompanied by challenges, but this is an incredible reward. Students often say that studying abroad is a huge period of personal growth for them.

  1. You will understand another culture

It doesn’t matter whether you travel across ten time zones or just travel in the nearby country, studying abroad will expose you to new people, new lifestyles and new cultures. Our society will be more global than ever before, and these experiences will expose you to different types of people and make you a better employee, student, and whole.

  1. You will stand out in front of future employers

You will gain valuable skills from the overseas study which will be noticed by employers. No matter what occupation you are in, you will become a stronger communicator, have better interpersonal skills, and gain street wisdom, which will help you think critically.

  1. You will broaden your education

Suppose you are an archaeology student, then studying in a country where you can actually travel to ancient ruins will be very valuable. No matter which field you are in, studying abroad will only expose you to new ways to pursue passion, or even to explore new passions. There are so many excellent universities in the world, so go beyond your current school and explore the possibilities.

  1. You will learn more about yourself

When you leave an environment that you feel comfortable with, you should expect a lot of personal growth to happen. It is not always easy to leave your hometown and move to a new environment – even if it is only a few months! But stepping out of the comfort zone can be exhilarating. Even in the most stressful moments of homesickness, language barriers, and foreign currency handling, you will learn to deal with the situation and find out who you are.

  1. You will gain valuable travel skills

Traveling well is indeed a skill, a skill that all global citizens should possess. Not only will you learn the social norms of a new place, but even figuring out public transportation and other things will provide you with valuable life skills.

  1. You will expand your network

If promoting personal growth and expanding educational opportunities are not sufficient reasons to study abroad, then go for friendship. Making new friends can be scary, but it is so rewarding. You may realize that you have a lot in common with people living in different countries. Whether you are connecting with other people in your country, or making friends with locals, expanding your network will be of great benefit to your social life, career and personal growth. With friends abroad, you always have a reason to go back!

  1. You will be immersed in a new language

Learning a new language can be an exciting experience, especially if you have been in school for many years. Even if you are only learning the basics, you are still exercising a part of your brain. Going to a country where they speak the same language as you is still a fascinating experience – you will learn new slang and language patterns, and see your own language through a completely different perspective.

  1. You will start a new adventure

You don’t even need to climb the mountain to study abroad for an adventure – trying a new food may be enough. But you still expose yourself to new things that are not accessible at home. Although you can (and of course you should!) take pictures for Instagram and your friends at home, you may be so immersed in these new experiences that you will put your phone down and enjoy.

  1. You will take all these new skills home

Going home after a semester (or a few years) abroad will bring all kinds of emotions. Reverse culture shock is real! But these emotions mean that you have changed and are likely to bring back a lot of skills. You may even realize how much you miss your homeland and develop a new understanding of it.

All in all, you will gain a lot from the overseas study – not only the knowledge. Studying abroad will make your life colorful and give you more opportunities. So if possible, just go to broaden your horizons and knowledge.
