Exclusive Track By Track: E.B & The Deadlights

Brit newcomers E.B & THE DEADLIGHTS (https://www.facebook.com/e.b.andthedeadlightsban )  kick on with their addictive mix of cut-throat riffery, thundering beats, satanically scuzzy licks and infectious choruses. The rising crew release their killer debut EP, Still See Ghosts, this Friday, and we asked the band to give an exclusive track by track breakdown of the record:

1. Nightmare Or Reality?

Matt had written this heavy punky metal riff and we just went from there. It was like the rest of the EP in the sense it was just really easy to write and once we got flowing with it, it really didn’t take long coming together. I wrote the lyrics in about 20 minutes before one practice which I find funny because they’re my favourite of the record!

2. Heathen Of The Mind – https://youtu.be/uLlh4qkYCGA

This was the 2nd song we wrote for the record, I believe. Like most of our songs, Matt had a riff and we went from there. Lyrically the song deals with losing faith in yourself and just falling down a downward spiral with no happy ending in sight.

3. Devil Between Me & You

Devil is definitely the most quirky song of the ep. This is one I wrote and brought to Matt and basically said “Have this song, I reckon it could fit with us feel free to tweak it so it does” and that’s how it came about. Lyrically it’s about that negative voice everyone has in their head and letting that get the better of you.

4. Empty Frames – https://youtu.be/KqwyUu5V2UE

The last song we wrote for the EP and probably the hardest one for us. We had written the first four tracks relatively quickly then hit a wall with this one and didn’t really get it finished 100% until we demoed it. Lyrically it’s crazy, I wanted to write lyrics that would sound as if they came from the mind of a Stephen King villain, and I had just watched the movie Wolf Creek before starting to write them, so they turned out pretty dark.

5. Still See Ghosts

My personal favourite of the entire record. This was the first song we wrote and was really the lightning strike moment of us thinking “alright we have something here let’s run with it”. I was reading IT by Stephen King at the time and the line “He Thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts” pops up regularly and I just really liked that line so I jotted it down, then when Matt sent through the song idea I knew right away I was going to work it in there somewhere and it ended up being the basis of the entire ep. For me the meaning of the song is about revisiting the past and having to find out the hard way the past is better off left there.”
