A Ratings Smash, “Child’s Play” TV Series Spinoff “Chucky” Gets a Season Two Renewal

When director Tom Holland (Fright Night, Thinner) unleashed writer and creator Don Mancini’s evil doll Chucky upon the world back in 1988’s Child’s Play, there can be little doubt that the erstwhile visionary had little to no inkling that this oddball film that felt like the Living Doll episode of season five’s Twilight Zone on major steroids would go on to become so ingrained in the world of popular culture. Yet here we are, eight movies and thirty-three years later with no less than an insanely popular spinoff series of the films entitled Chucky currently all the rage. How cool and unlikely is all of that? Chalk it up to creative writing and directing which has taken the Child’s Play franchise into some very exciting and dark alleyways; “Friend till the end” indeed.

For those that may not have dipped as of yet into the Chucky series, the show follows the events of the film Cult of Chucky. A fourteen year old buys the malevolent doll with a sick and wicked sense of humor at a garage sale where he intends to use him in an art project at his school. Faster than you can say “Murder, mayhem and chaos”, a series of brutal and baffling murders begin to occur around town, all leading Chucky’s new owner with one undeniable fact – His doll is viciously very much alive.

The freshman season of Chucky has performed gangbusters in the ratings and has officially been greenlit for a sophomore season from those fine folks over at USA and SYFY, promising even more bloody fun carnage and head-spinning twists and turns, according to our Puppet Master fiends over at Bloody Disgusting News.

In a press release, Child’s Play creator extraordinaire Don Mancini said that “We’re thrilled to start pulling the strings on a second season of puppet mayhem with Chucky. Many thanks to our partners at USA, Syfy and UCP for their incredible support and guidance bringing Chucky to the small screen, bigger than ever. And to the fans, Chucky sends his still-undying thanks, and a message: ‘This isn’t over, not by a long shot. You better watch your backs in 2022!’”

Chucky is one of the delightful surprise hits of 2021, a sort of Cobra Kai for the horror set and this card-carrying member of cheesy horror is excited to see where the series lands when it returns in 2022!
