Hi Anika, thanks for sitting down with us today. Let’s start off by taking it back, when can you remember your love of music starting?
I remember my love of music starting pretty much from the time I could talk. I was singing constantly throughout the day. I sang in the car, at school, in the shower, just everywhere. My teachers even knew me as the girl who always sang when I was younger. I always had an appreciation for how music could make you feel, and how we can get so emotional over a few lyrics or a beautiful voice. One of the most rewarding moments for me when I was younger was when I was at a recital and I sang an adaptation of “Silent Night” and I made the audience cry. I realized then that music was something so powerful and I was proud to have captured a bit of its beauty through that performance.
Was there a moment where you realized for sure that you wanted to give a music career a try?
My senior year of high school I was doing a performance with David Burnham through my school, and that is actually where I met my producer, Mark Vogel. He was the pianist for the performance, and when the show was over he asked if I would be willing to work with him. I was so honored that he saw something in me because singing was always one of my greatest passions, but I had never imagined actually pursuing it. I started working with him, and we instantly clicked. The rest is history.
Do you have any themes or motifs that show up over and over again in your songwriting?
I honestly try to base my songs off of whatever I am feeling or going through in the moment because I feel that the more authenticity I put into my music, the more I appreciate it and can even learn from it. A lot of my music has to do with my relationships, and the good and bad times that come with that. Writing really gives me time to reflect on my feelings and turn even simple situations into something meaningful with music.
What’s the scariest part of releasing music for you?
I think the scariest part of releasing music for me is just the simple: “Will people like it?” I have put so much time and effort into this, and I am extremely proud of every song that I have made. I just hope the world feels the same way when it comes time to release. I hope they can sense the passion and love that I have for music when they listen to my work, and I hope that they can even relate to some of my songs as well.
What are some challenges you’ve faced so far as you enter the music industry? How did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges that I have faced starting out in the music industry is really finding my sound. I have always known what type of music that I like, but I found that creating my own personal style was very difficult at first. It honestly took a couple of songs to really find a vibe that I was happy with, but after that, I really have been creating nonstop.
Tell us about your upcoming releases! We hear we can expect a debut single soon?
Yes! I am so excited to announce that my first single called “Are You Down” is going to be released in the next couple of months! I have worked so hard to get this song to where it is, and I think that it is the perfect first song to release because it shows a lot of character and I feel like a lot of people can relate to it as well!
