Raise your hand if, like myself, you feel it is all but impossible to replace iconic Jeopardy mainstay Alex Trebek in that integral role of host. Much like his former Turner Classic Movies colleague Robert Osborne, there is just no way possible to replicate that level of warmth, good-will and grasp of knowledge that the onetime To Tell the Truth luminary possessed in spades. He made it all look so effortless, right? Not that this salient fact has prevented the top brass at ABC from trying; after all, Jeopardy is a vast and sprawling money-making machine with countless fans out there in the big, wide world. One of the hosts that the Powers That Be tried early on in a temporary manner, among others, was beloved Reading Rainbow and Star Trek: The Next Generation alum LeVar Burton. More than most, Burton just felt right not only as a temporary passerby on the Jeopardy landscape, but also as a potential permanent host for the venerable series which has felt rudderless since Trebek’s passing. Alas, ‘twas not to be: Mayim Bialik, no piker herself when it comes to ably standing-in for Trebek, was given the reins to steer the game show into future waters, and a fine choice it’s been. Still, it’s been difficult to see Burton get passed up for the gig, and that’s a simple testament to his own able skills. But weep not for the man who wears far-future visors like no other, Dear and Constant Reader: According to our Roots-fanatics over at The Hollywood Reporter, Burton has a hosting gig on his dance card now that might just make us forget his brief dalliance with Jeopardy.
LeVar Burton has officially been named the regular host of the upcoming game show Trivial Pursuit which is based off of the popular 1980s board game. The new series does not yet have an official network home, but with heavy-hitters such as Hasbro and eOne aboard the project as producers, you just know it’s only a matter of time before some lucky network (or streaming platform) can call itself the home of LeVar Burton’s Trivial Pursuit.
“LeVar Burton has been an iconic member of American pop culture for decades from Roots to Reading Rainbow to Star Trek and beyond. His love for intellectual curiosity paired with his ability to connect with audiences worldwide make him the perfect partner to bring Hasbro’s beloved trivia game to households in a new and exciting way,” enthused Big Wheel for eOne Tara Long.
For his part, Burton was equally excited about his new gig, saying that “Trivial Pursuit is one of the best-known brands in the gaming universe. I am thrilled to have partnered with Hasbro and eOne to bring this beloved game to market as a premium show for television.”
