Hi Brigitte, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been great, thank you! Just released my new single “Honeybee” and I’m working on more new music, so can’t complain!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Honeybee”?
Honeybee is based on a metaphor between a bee and a flower which represents a relationship between two people. The song alludes to this idea of a “mutualistic relationship,” how both the bee and flower give and receive what is necessary for growth. But with any relationship, it’s possible that one individual may end up feeling used or taken advantage of when the other collects what it needs without fully reciprocating. A couple of the lyric lines in Honeybee, “…collecting what you need while blossoming the inside of me. Driven by routine, you gently unravel and flee,” play on this idea of unbalanced reciprocity.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes! I was outside gardening one day and noticed a bee on a flower. It reminded me of how I felt during that time in my life – stuck and “rooted” like the flower. The bee had a greater ability & freedom to receive and depart when it needed because of its wings, while the flower had to wait as it was confined to the earth.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Not right now. Although, I can definitely picture this track being turned into a music video.
How was the recording and writing process?
This one was particularly special to me. Honeybee was the first song I recorded with a new lineup of bandmates and I really felt like they achieved my vision for it. We fine tuned this song for almost a year, which is quite a bit longer than the writing process for most of my songs. It felt great to get back into the studio and see the song come to life.
What role does Dallas play in your music?
Dallas is actually a great place to make music. There is a lot of opportunity here, but it isn’t as saturated as some of the other cities like Austin, making it more achievable to make a living as a musician.
Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?
Definitely! I’ll be going back into the studio later this year or early next year to record some new material! I’ve fleshed out ideas for a 3rd album, so I’ll be working on that throughout 2022! Stay tuned!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
You can expect a new single likely in the Spring of next year. I do have a title for it, but you’ll have to wait for the release announcement. 🙂
What else is happening next in Brigitte Mena’s world?
Writing and recording! I basically have a 3rd album written acoustically, so the next step is to work on the songs with my bandmates and step back into the studio.
