INTERVIEW: Chew Magna

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Yes really good thanks – we are happy to finally reveal the new song to the world and we’ve just played our first gig for 18months which was fun!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Listless”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Lyrically the song is about wasting potential I guess…I just had this lyric – “A fish sucking the side of a tank in vain” and the theme evolved from that.

Musically it’s a bit more interesting, we spend a long time jamming riffs and letting them evolve. The first intro bit was one jam and the actual verse/chorus part was another which we found worked together and that stuck. We even had to draw the whole structure out on a whiteboard at one point!

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yeah there’s a video coming we shot in one day in a spare room of one of our houses. We wanted to capture a claustrophobic  atmosphere to tie in with the lyrics, I won’t give too much more! Simon the guitarist and his partner Annie planned, filmed and edited the whole thing and its turned out really well! We are excited for people to see it!

How was the recording and writing process?

Listless was actually the final song we recorded for the album . We went back into the studio and did a couple more new songs we felt were quite strong. Chew Magna is a jam band, one of us brings a guitar or bass riff and we all just play over it and see what evolves. We wanted to record the album with Martin Hurley  because of his experience working Steve Albini, we knew he could capture the energy  we wanted.

What role does Manchester play in your music?

It’s a really great city to live and make music in, full of inspiring and like minded people and it’s a lot smaller than you would think.  I  think it’s fair to say that aside from maybe the Fall and New Order, we are far more influenced by US music: Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Slint, Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Trail Of Dead etc

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album– how’s that coming along?

Yeah all ready to go, looking like March time we hope.

What else is happening next in Chew Magna’s world?

We’re still only just getting back into the swing of regular jamming following covid. We’ve got a fair few new songs already + scores of riffs/ideas we’ve written during lock down so we may even head back into the studio in the first half of next year, we shall see!
