Love him or hate him, Barney the Dinosaur – that singing children’s dinosaur who made such a splash upon arrival back in 1992 – is a cultural phenomenon that has been embraced by multiple generations for his message of love and understanding (something society as a whole is in desperate need of in this day and age). But when you get down to brass-tacks, what’s there really to add about creator Sheryl Leach’s purple and green dinosaur? According to our Dino-lovin’ fanatics over at Variety, quite a lot, as a full-length documentary is currently in the works on the pop sensation.
Set to roam the entertainment landscape as a three-part documentary from those fine-feathered stalwarts over at Peacock, the still-untitled production has officially begun production as of this writing. The series proper will put under a microscope the fast rise of Barney and all of the oodles of love that went along with the benign fellow. Tellingly, it will also take a close look at the hate and vitriol afforded the character once a backlash occurred. Similar backlashes among very popular projects such as Forrest Gump and Titanic parallel Barney’s own and undoubtedly holds a mirror up to our own toxicity as a society. Think of it as the philosophy of They Build You up Only to Tear You Down. Life, ain’t it grand?
“Barney the Dinosaur was a ubiquitous character for children and parents alike and we are thrilled to work with the Scout Productions team to bring this three-part series to Peacock,” enthused Executive Vice-President of Unscripted Content for NBCUniversal Television & Streaming (say it ten times fast!) Rod Aissa. “This documentary is bound to captivate audiences like Barney has over the years.”
The new doc will feature exclusive interviews and vintage footage, and take a deep-dive into the phenomenon that swept the entire globe. Not content to be a mere love-fest, the three-parter will also interview some of this fictional character’s fiercest critics.
Produced by Scout Productions (the stalwarts behind the stellar documentary Fog of War) and directed and executive produced by Tommy Avallone, the Barney docuseries is scheduled to drop on streaming platform Peacock sometime in 2022.
All of you Barney fans – and even all of you detractors (who really need a big hug from Barney, methinks) – keep your eyes glued to Vents for any updates we receive on this intriguing documentary series!
