7 Reasons to visit your dentist today

There are a lot of things you can do at home to ensure the health of your teeth. But, when you’ve done all you can at home, it’s time for a dentist appointment. Visiting the dentist twice a year should already be a part of your established routine, but if not, here’s a few reasons as to why it’s important to visit your dentist as soon as you can.

1.   Monitor any ongoing health problems

A dentist is a medical professional and can pick up on any oral health problems you may have in your mouth. The whole of your body is connected, including your mouth. This means that if you have any other health problems, like heart disease or an eating disorder, you could be more susceptible to other dental problems.

If you’re on certain medications or undergoing certain treatments, it could mean that you are more likely to develop certain oral health problems, like gum disease for example. The benefit of speaking to your dentist is that they will be able to advise you on what you can do at home to eliminate the risk of any dental health issues.

2.   If you are experiencing pain in your mouth

Toothache is one of the most uncomfortable pains. That’s a fact.

If your teeth are painful or are extremely sensitive to hot or cold food and liquid, then they should be checked over by your dentist. There can be many reasons as to why your teeth are feeling sensitive and sore, but if it’s consistent, or you’re unsure of what the cause could be, then it could be a sign of a different oral health issue. Tooth decay, gum disease and infections can all show themselves through painful teeth, so to be sure that it’s nothing more serious then go to your dentist.

3.   If your gums are bleeding or swollen

Plaque can so easily build up under the gumline, even if you are both brushing and flossing. Sometimes this nasty plaque can only be removed by professional cleaning, and if it isn’t removed it could cause gum disease. Also, bleeding gums may be a sign of cancer so it’s extremely important that you get this issue checked as soon as possible.

4.   If you can’t get rid of your bad breath (halitosis)

If your bad breath is consistent and struggles to be neutralised by brushing or mouthwash, then it might be a sign of a deeper issue, like bronchitis or acid reflux. Nobody wants bad breath, it can make you self-conscious, by talking to a dentist they’ll be able to recommend products or prescribe medication to help.

5.   If it hurts to eat food

It’s not normal to be in pain when you eat. If you’re struggling to chew or swallow your food then a dentist will be able to help by working out the root and area of the problem.

6.   If you have open sores in your mouth

Open or bleeding sores in your mouth could cause a lot of discomfort in your mouth. Sometimes they might be not as serious as you may think, maybe your retainer rubbed on the side of your mouth or you’ve burnt it on some hot food. However, oral cancer can be first shown through open sores, so if they spread, see your dentist.

7.   You want to improve your smile

If you’re not happy with your current smile, then a dentist can give you options to explore to fix that. Depending on whether you’re wanting to straighten, or brighten your teeth, there are numerous options, from retainers to braces, to whitening, and your dentist will be able to discuss these with you. Sometimes whitening can be a good option to give your teeth a makeover without completing too much dental work.

Visiting your dentist is a must

Many people avoid the dentist because it’s a hassle or just because they don’t like going. But, it’s so important (we can’t stress enough) to go. It’s nothing to be scared of! Whether they just do a deep clean of your teeth or find a dental health issue, visiting the dentist is the best way forward to ensure healthy teeth and smiles.
