As someone who has read comics for going on five decades (GULP!), I recognize just how exceedingly difficult it can be for writers and artists to successfully introduce a new face on the spandex block that will resound for audiences both new and old. For every Miles Morales or Jonathan Kent, there’s a battalion of lesser-lights that, for whatever reason, just never got called off the bench and into the big leagues: Ray Terrill (A.K.A. The Ray II), Ben Reilly (Spider-Man’s clone – Or is he?!? Mwah-ha-ha!), Wallace West (A.K.A. DC’s New 52 version of beloved fan-favorite Wally West) and…Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys?!? Alright that last one might be a bit of a stretch, but you get my point – Finding heroes that stick can be a daunting prospect. Super-scribe Brian Michael Bendis knows all too-well about the ups and downs of bringing forth new faces in established comic book continuities, yet the talent behind Ultimate Spider-Man, Daredevil, The New Avengers, Young Justice and Jinx somehow threaded that tricky needle and brought to fans worldwide the adventures of a young teen girl by the name of Naomi. Introduced by Bendis and his fellow gremlins David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell for DC in early 2019’s Naomi #1, Naomi McDuffie, this is one character who might never have to worry about warming benches for the A-List mystery-men: As written – a powerful, intelligent and forthright young lady navigating her way through daily life and armies of supervillains who want her pushing up daisies – Naomi is absolutely 100% A-List.
According to our “Hey, when the heck is DC ever going to give the JSA their own title again?” pals over at The Hollywood Reporter, Naomi is poised to make the leap from the four color page and onto television sets the world over. And what’s more, she has a nigh legendary comic book forefather to make with the introductions for her.
The CW hit series Superman & Lois is set to help in the launching of an all-new weekly Naomi series in early 2022.
Both Naomi and season two of Superman & Lois are scheduled to premiere in January, replacing the Tuesday night fan-favorites The Flash and Riverdale (both comic book spin-offs themselves); the latter shows will be shuffled off to new nights when they zoom back in March.
While Naomi is still a very new character, DC and Warner’s obviously grasp the popularity and the buzz in the world of comics, enough so that they have the new series follow immediately after Superman & Lois when both shows drop on Tuesday, January 11. Talk about a ringing endorsement!
