Somehow I feel Cheech and Chong never had problems like these.
The upcoming film Trim Season is a horror story about a crew of twentysomethings from L.A. who hit upon the plan to make some quick greenbacks by traveling to an out of the way weed farm and work as pickers. What could possibly go wrong, right? Well, according to the plot synopsis offered up by our Bong Appetit fans over at The Hollywood Reporter, quite a bit actually: Upon arrival, our intrepid crew – who apparently chose between a weekend of harvesting weed or smoking it at Camp Crystal Lake (‘cause don’t these characters sound like potential roadkill for a certain hockey-masked killer?) –quickly discover that things are not quite right at Casa de Weed and desperately begin looking for an escape that doesn’t involve a body bag. Trim Season is reportedly based off of a real-life incident where a group of women vanished after throwing in for harvest season in Humboldt County, California. To sweeten that pot even more (Waka- Waka), the film is also inspired by a forthcoming comic book.
The cast for Trim Season has been revealed today, and it’s an impressive one made up of some genuinely talented rising stars in the industry: Bethlehem Million (Sick), Jane Badler (Free Fall), Alex Essoe (Midnight Mass), Bex Taylor-Klaus (13 Reasons Why), Ally Ioannides (Into the Badlands), Cory Hart (Fear the Walking Dead), Ryan Donowho (Broken Flowers), Mark Senter (The Devil’s Carnival) and feature film newcomer Juliette Kenn De Balinthazy (Once In A Lifetime) all make up this horror ensemble.
Trim Season was co-written (alongside David Blair) by and was directed by respected production designer Ariel Vida (Vide Noir, The World Ender). The script is based off a story by Megan Sutherland, Cullen Poythress and Sean E. DeMott.
“Trim Season explores themes of power and agency, friendship and loss, all thorough a stylized lens brought to life by an amazing cast and crew that I couldn’t be more proud of and grateful for,” said Vida in a press release that sounds more like a film summary for Enchanted April versus a nail-biting horror film. Let’s hope Ms. Vida is just playing it coy on the scare element of the flick, as it’s been too long since a genuinely scary film meandered down the pike.
Trim Season just finished shooting in Salt Lake City, Utah and will next hit the film festival circuit prior to a theatrical release.
