Netflix Diversifies With the Pick-Up of 30 Japanese Titles from Nippon TV

It’s always a good thing to peek around the corner from our own established neighborhood and see what’s going on with everyone else. It’s how we discover how the other half lives, what they think, what their dreams are, what fears haunt them. The neat thing about getting a glimpse into other towns, other cities, other countries is that it affirms that we’re all a lot more alike than we are different, despite what some might try to tell us otherwise. That commonality among men and women is on perfect display in the film and television of our global neighbors. I recall as a teenager seeing the classic Italian film The Bicycle Thief and being struck by how much the characters in the story reminded me of my own friends and neighbors. It’s that sense of the universal no doubt that Netlfix is banking on with their acquisition of no less than thirty Japanese titles from Nippon TV, according to our globetrotting pals over at The Hollywood Reporter.

Nippon TV, a Japanese broadcaster, revealed a 30-title series licensing agreement between them and streaming behemoth Netflix in which the digital platform now holds the online rights to that sizable assortment of content for many Asian markets outside of Japan.

“We are very pleased to announce that Netflix will be offering our content to its audience across Asia,” Nippon TV Big Wheel Keisuke Miyata said on Monday. “This region is a key part of our continued growth, and now coupled with Netflix’s strength as one of the world’s leading streaming platforms, we are confident that Nippon TV’s titles will be well received by viewers in this prominent new territory for us.”

In a twist of irony, Nippon TV has been the owner of Hulu Japan since 2014, which happens to be a competitor of Netflix in that country. This goes some way in explaining why the rights in this Netflix-Nippon deal exclude the local Japanese market. It is worth noting that the deal with Netflix marks the very first time that the acknowledged Japanese TV behemoth has sold content to the House of Cobra Kai and Stranger Things.

So exactly which series and films will Netflix be featuring from this deal in those aforementioned regions? Death Note, Tokyo Tarareba Girls, Mr. Hiiragi’s Homeroom, Your Turn to Kill and Life’s Punchline are but a few of the stellar programming choices Netflix can now lay claim to.
