INTERVIEW: Roxo

In an interview with Vents Magazine, emerging artist Roxo shares his journey as a multi-talented artist who’s been carving out his own sound and earning himself a growing audience. Roxo gives us some insight for aspiring musicians and entrepreneurs.

Let’s talk about your daily routine. Can you briefly describe/outline your typical day?

A typical day for me starts at around 10 AM. I’m working from home, so I work from around 11:30 AM – 8:30 PM. Whenever I can find time in between or around that, I’m working on content, making music, and planning how to come upon something.

How did the name “Roxo” come about?

Man. That’s a funny story, I guess. I always knew I needed to get successful somehow. My parents always said I was going to be a millionaire. Even since I was a kid. When I was nine, I figured I wanted to get into entertainment. So, I made a gaming YouTube channel. The name was “Reaper,” and I had a crazy logo for it. When I wanted to create a new name, I knew I wanted to keep the “R” logo, so I picked a random ass word that was short and easy to remember. I had variations like “Roxo the Rapper” and “Roxo, the Bandit,” but Roxo always stuck.

What’s your favorite song you’ve released to date?

These are great questions… That’s a good one. Picking from everything that’s out, it’s a hard match. I’ll say three. It’s between Bell Road, Wu-Tang, and Options. They’re all on my project, a “Ville 2000,” but man, I love those. The stuff I’m working on now is just in a different world, though.

Let’s talk about “Ville 2000”! What was the idea behind this record?

Ville 2000” has always been an idea I’ve wanted to put together. Since my freshman year of high school, I knew that I wanted to do a project with that title. The title is based on where I’m from, Nashville, and the year I was born, 2000. I really just thought it was a fantastic ass title that could convey the topic. It’s just the story of my life. But it’s split into three chapters or central ideas, with four songs in each chapter. The first chapter is “Misunderstood,” which is based on love and this feeling of infatuation. Then the second chapter is “Bank Corrupt,” which is about family and knowing who’s really with you. Lastly is “Drowning,” which is about self-reflection and realizing you can’t give yourself to others until you know who you are.

If there was one piece of advice you could give aspiring musicians, what would it be?

Stay humble, be kind, and don’t ever give up. Family is the most crucial thing in the world, so keep them close and don’t ever forget that this is about the love of music. Once you get wrapped up in fame and money, it’s hard for it not to become the priority. Just know what you’re in it for.

What are your career goals?

I just want to leave behind a positive impact and a recognizable legacy when it comes down to it. I’ll have at least six crazy projects out before I turn 23. That’s the plan, at least. The music is what keeps me going in general. But honestly, I want to fuck up the music game and leave some history. I believe in myself, and I know I have what it takes. My two main goals have always been to be an XXL Freshman and win a Grammy, so I’m retiring. Once I do that, I’ll retire… I’m kidding, haha. But, I genuinely won’t ever stop making music and trying to make the next best thing. I hope to be mentioned with the Drake’s, Kendrick’s, Lennon’s, and the people I’ve always looked up to.

So, what does the rest of the year look like for you? What’s dropping next?

For the rest of the year, we’re just going to keep pushing as hard as we have been and putting out content every day. You may see some features or singles in November. Maybe some music videos here and there. But I most definitely plan on dropping another project in earlier December, so make sure to be on the lookout. Just have to keep working hard and staying in touch with God. I think things will be pretty cool. “Human Nature” is coming soon.

Stay connected with Roxo.
