Grammy-nominated American singer/songwriter/rapper Matisyahu makes a revelatory return with ‘Chameleon’, the lead single from his seventh studio album ‘Matisyahu’ – out March 4, 2022 via Fallen Sparks/Thirty Tigers, distributed by The Orchard. The album is available for pre-order from today. Matisyahu is joined on the new single by the Columbian-born, Brooklyn-based pop and electronic duo Salt Cathedral (Juliana Ronderos & Nicolas Losada) who also co-wrote and produced the track and forthcoming album. Fueled by authentic storytelling during an intense period of enlightened music-making, ‘Matisyahu’ will be the artist’s first album release in five years. In this first look at revealing his most thoughtful and autobiographical album to date, with ‘Chameleon’, Matisyahu shares a celebratory anthem which presents a narrative of both his inner and public facing transformations.
A percussive, dancehall-inspired romp, ‘Chameleon’ is a lyrical self-reflection, and offers a tantalizing peek at the driving themes behind ‘Matisyahu’. Juliana Ronderos’ bell-toned vocals play call and response with Matisyahu’s lead, taking the listener on a ride of shapeshifting musical styles and universal contemplations of perception versus reality. On the inspiration behind ‘Chameleon’, Matisyahu explains: “A Chameleon has two facets. On the one hand, it blends with its surroundings in order to survive without sticking out. On the other hand, it literally sheds its coat in order to grow. Over time, I have learned that for me, there is a necessity to amalgamate, at times, but I must also be willing to shed facades, to continue to grow and change.”
Matisyahu has sold over 5 million physical albums, with over 500 million total career streams across all global platforms. He has topped Billboard’s Reggae Album charts four times, initially with ‘Youth’ which was Certified Gold and also hit #4 on the Billboard 200. His breakout hit ‘King Without a Crown’ reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on alternative rock radio, and four of his last five studio albums have landed in the top 20 on the Billboard 200. Matisyahu is a founding signatory of the Black-Jewish Alliance and the Creative Community for Peace.
Matisyahu is currently completing a US City Winery tour – An Evening With Matisyahu – with further headline slots in December. Matisyahu’s regular annual ‘Festival of Light Tour’ will soon be announced.
