Vents Magazine Interview
Hi, Sean-Ryan. Welcome to Ventsmagazine. How are you doing?
I am doing good, things are going well, I recently just finished a project that I can release no details about, but am looking forward to announcing as soon as I can.
1. You voice the character Valentino on Cartoon Network’s hit show Victor & Valentino. Tell us a little about the show and about your character Valentino.
The show follows two half-brothers staying in the fictional town of Monte Macabre with their grandmother. Victor, the younger brother, is a prankster full of bravado while Valentino, the elder half-brother, is a careful, analytical, booksmart, worrywart intellectual. This town is anything, but the norm as over the course of their adventures the brothers come across multiple beasts and beings of myth and legends.
2. What is your process for creating the voice for a character?
My average process tends to involve research into the description for a character or using the picture to gauge the style and feeling of the show. Most descriptions contain key traits that can influence choices on whether someone is nasally, higher, or lower pitched. Whether they have an accent of some variety or simply my own natural voice without any intonation or modification. Description, traits, and character image if provided is usually used as my basis for finding a voice.
3. Victor & Valentino is just starting its third season. What can you tell us about the new season?
It is an amazing season with some deep exploration of the lore of Monte Macabre and its inhabitants and as much as I want to tell you everything that would be a massive spoiler. Ok fine, here is a small morsel of what is to come in season 3. In the third season, there’s something sinister unfolding in Monte Macabre, and Victor and Valentino plan to sniff it out before it’s too late. Along the way, the boys will return to the Underworld for Dia de Muertos, hang out with the Reynas de Los Angeles for a Mariachi musical, and mark Halloween with a harrowing two-part spooktacular special.
That is all I can say for now! Tune in because it will be quite the ride and we will have some massive developments.
4. What has been your favorite episode so far?
The episode titled Los Cadejos followed the brothers after having a big fight trying to complete an errand for their grandmother. Valentino aka Val is furious and is refusing to forgive Victor aka Vic and after coming across a mythical pair of dogs learned the value of family and forgiving them no matter what they do. As a elder brother myself it was nice to put a real family relationship into context like that in this episode even with the mythical inclusion it was a very touching illustration of sibling relationships.

5. What’s the biggest hurdle have you ever faced in your life?
Truly coming to understand that I will not be the person for every role I auditioned for was definitely a hurdle for me. As an actor you will audition for more roles than you will book and while reading that can seem daunting it is by no means something that should deter you from chasing your dream. You will find a project that you are the perfect fit for and that was something I had to understand well so I could continue pursuing my dream career.
6. What do you most love about being a voice over actor?
The ability to use my voice to bring to life and participate in hundreds of different worlds and universes. Like reading a good book, immersing yourself in a role for a project can help you exist in the worlds that you are helping bring to life. There is also the entertainment that others gain from it. I love being able to work with so many people on “Victor and Valentino” many of whom have voiced the entirety of my childhood such as Tom Kenny and Dee Bradley Baker. I just want to give others some of that same joy that I received from them through my work.
7. Do you have any future projects you can talk about?
My most recent project that was released was the narrative podcast that came with The Beautiful Liar album by the X Ambassadors. I played a character named Bobby Schaffer who is one of many different children who had been experimented on and gained some degree of superhuman ability. It is out now on Spotify and I highly recommend you give it a listen.
