It is perhaps one of the most iconic films to have emerged from the 1980s, a rousing and rip-roaring modern day spin on the Crosby and Hope Road movies from the 1940s. I’m speaking here of the John Landis comedy opus The Blues Brothers which starred an on-point and rarely better John Belushi alongside his Saturday Night Live cohort Dan Aykroyd. The movie, about two brothers who rush to rescue an endangered Roman Catholic orphanage from an appointment with a wrecking ball, was an immediate smash hit and solidified both Belushi and Aykroyd’s A- List cred in Hollywood. It’s also a poignant reminder of the comedic genius that the late John Belushi possessed in spades; no comedian could touch his off-the-wall and zany pathos and for anyone that thought Animal House was a fluke for the Chicago, IL native had another thing coming once The Blues Brothers took over the box-office.
The Blues Brothers and the indelible friendship that Belushi and Aykroyd shared is about to receive the docuseries treatment according to our 1941 aficionados over at The Hollywood Reporter. What’s more, it has been sanctioned by the estate of John Belushi, a true gift for fans of the late comedian who long to know more about the man and his craft.
Details have it that Judith Belushi Pisano, widow of John, along with her son Lucas will be teaming up with their patriarch’s old dance partner Dan Aykroyd to collaborate with U***** Originals, one of the principal production shingles behind this docuseries.
In a press release announcing the upcoming course-corrective docuseries, Aykroyd noted that “Last year, The Blues Brothers film was selected by The Library of Congress to the National Film Registry, and being in this most worthwhile cultural preservation initiative made us realize there remains more to this story. Judy and I are pleased to collaborate with U***** Originals to produce the only authorized, optimized, socio-forensic examination of the Blues Brothers and the world that created and embraces them.”
For fans of the film and the two lead actors featured therein, treats will abound in the upcoming, still untitled docuseries including unseen materials. Along the way the producers will take a close look at how the film resonates in today’s age.
The woman who perhaps knew John Belushi better than anyone, his widow Belushi Pisano, said in a statement that with this new look at the classic film “we continue Dan and John’s original mission to share their passion for this music and, foremost, to celebrate the artists who created it. We expect this to be a significant historical and cultural investigation.”
No distributor attached for The Blues Brothers docuseries, but as huge fans of this evergreen film ourselves, expect plenty of updates from all of us here at Vents as soon as more information is revealed!
