INTERVIEW: It’s Karma It’s Cool

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

All good thanks! Martyn here, We seem to have been one of the luckier bands with all the drama over the last year and a half in that we managed to release last years ‘Woke up in Hollywood’ and manage to write and record our new album ‘Homesick for our future destinations’

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “She Slept With The Radio On”?

This one was born in a very short period of time, I believe we were jamming at the studio (where it was also recorded) and this tune fell into our hands as a little jam at the end of a rehearsal

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I cant speak for Jim on the lyrics, but he’s always got a great knack for getting the best music out of us, I believe for this one he simply asked for a nostalgia based simple and effective tune, and we took the ball and ran with it

Tell us about the video for the track?

We’ve never previously done a video where we feature in it, so we felt like it was the right time to actually show our faces, especially given that they’re plastered all over the front cover of the new CD, so we grabbed my camera, got in the studio and essentially blagged it on the day. Thank god for lighting!

How was the recording and writing process?

An absolute dream. I record, produce and mix all of our music and the guys are just so easy to work with. Tight, creatively inspiring, and they let me go absolutely AWOL with guitars, harmonies, layers and textures

What role does Lincoln play in your music?

Never really thought about that! As I mentioned earlier, nostalgia for past events and better times seems to be a running theme for a lot of our music, and seeing as 3/4 of us grew up here and in the surrounding area, I imagine a fair bit of Lincoln and Lincolnshire seeps in there, whether its the parks we played in as a kid, or old houses full of past memories

How have the likes of REM influence your writing?

Recently, a lot. They were always a band I personally admired but never listened to too much of, until I met Jim and started doing some research and delving into their back catalogue. One of our strengths as a band is that we all have such varied music tastes so it always ends up being a melting pot of genres and crossovers, but with Jim being our lead man always being a huge REM fan, he’s definitely brought that influence to us

Does the new single mean we can expect an album– how’s that coming along?

Absolutely! Its all recorded, mixed and mastered and we already have the physical CD’s!

Any release date or title in mind?

November 5th, and we’re playing a launch party in Lincoln for it on December 4th

What else is happening next in It’s Karma It’s Cool’s world?

More. Always more! Hopefully now the worlds calmed down a bit we can think about some proper tours. And of course, more music!
