INTERVIEW WITH EMERGING ARTIST IGNACIO CORREA

Ignacio Correa Marfull is a Chilean Filmmaker, songrwriter, and playwright who with his latest work “La contienda” has received many good ratings from specialized critics. Well, before we proceed, we would like to thank Ignacio for sparing time for this interview today.

About your last theatre play, is  ”La contienda” your most significative work?

I would say that La contienda is different, not the most significative theatre play that i ever wrote. But yes, i give to this work an aggregated value because is the theatre play where i felt more comfortable writing and also it was a creative proccess that involved a lot of different scenes of my life where i was exploring the years of living in different countries like as Denmark, France, England, Spain, Chile and Ukraine, and the final conclusion was that im still looking the same things.

About your work, what do you think is the difference with what is actually in the cultural scene?

I think my work is quite different from what is currently on exhibition, especially because although I have an approach and references to the work of Brecht or Vitez, I try to find places that can have an immediate fictionalization and from there start to make historical and aesthetics contrasts and that can give more reality to the non-fictionalized work.

In your last play, music has a very important value. What is your relationship with music?

Music is not only an important element in my theatre plays, I think it is also one of the most important things in my life. Since I was a kid I make music and also I’m lucky because two of my best friends are musicians who work in the industry (in France and Chile) and we usually talk about the role of music in the narrative and try to compose together. In “La contienda” I created the music with a good friend from France (Benoit Alay) and we tried to do it differently, using it as a narrative element and in contrast to what is happening in the play. For me music is more of a language where you can express yourself without words to set narrative tempos and rhythms.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

Honestly more than see myself in a place, i think i would prefer to found myself in something that i’m making, in that way i can see myself writing and keep making music. For me success is more about to make people think about the place where we are living and how we are living. Then, in fact, i see myself writing and trying to make people discover by themselves the answers to the questions that my theatre and musice give to them.

What advice can you give to someone who is starting in art?

I can suggest to everyone who wants to make art, to try to explore themselves and what is around them, always trying to see from a different point of view and angles. Also, another important thing is to consider the questions that are alive since the beginning of the story, because for me there are some existential questions that help us to have perspective on how we see life, giving us great answers.
