Perhaps there’s a scattering of clues about director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest in-the-works film Knock at the Cabin imbedded within the auteurs just announced gig as Jury President for the upcoming Berlin Film Festival? Or have I seen The Sixth Sense one too many times and just become quite paranoid?
The super-busy Shyamalan was announced today by our Lady in the Water connoisseurs over at Variety as having received the honor of being selected as the next Jury President at the 72nd Berlinale, which will take place in 2022.
Artistic Director for the famed festival – and all around good guy – Carlo Chatrian issued a press release today announcing the choice of Shyamalan, saying that he was “pleased and honored that M. Night Shyamalan has accepted our invitation to serve as president of the jury…Throughout his career he’s shaped a universe in which fears and desires stand side by side, where young people are not only the protagonists but also the driving force for overcoming dread. Within the U.S. movie business Shyamalan is a unique figure, a filmmaker that has remained faithful to his vision. This truthfulness to one’s ideal is also what we are looking for in our selection.”
The Berlin Film Festival has many reasons to celebrate its upcoming February 10-20, 2022 activities: Along with almost every other film festival across the blessed globe, this legendary cinema lover’s dream of a festival was compromised severely by the worldwide pandemic. The 2022 festival will mark the return of in-person festivities, finally allowing a boots-on-the-ground experience not just for studios anxious to find the next No Country for Old Men, but also ordinary folks who happen to plain old love good movies.
In his own statement, Shyamalan waxed enthusiastic about the Berlin Film Festival and his selection as Jury President: “I have always felt like an independent filmmaker within the system of Hollywood. It is exactly those things in us that are different and unorthodox that define our voice. I have tried to maintain these things in myself and cheer others on to protect those aspects in their art and in themselves. Being asked to be a part of Berlinale is deeply meaningful to me. It represents the highest imprimatur for a filmmaker. Being able to support and celebrate the world’s very best talent in storytelling is a gift I happily accept.”
