Mainline, welcome to VENTS! Can you tell us a little about your debut album, The Unholy Idol?
Well we started working on it immediately after we released our self titled EP in 2020. We actually wrote the song The Unholy Idol that weekend! At the time we didn’t really plan on doing a full length album yet, but when we couldn’t go play shows we decided to focus our efforts and time on an album so the time off wasn’t wasted. We even threw in a cover on this album, Cold Sweat by Thin Lizzy, which was a song we all loved!
Does the album have a concept?
It’s not so much a concept where all the songs tie in directly with each other, they do have similar themes, but we tried to make it feel balanced. The title track and the album cover directly correlate though. Anthony came up with the initial concept for the artwork and we commissioned an artist to paint an old school cover for us, something very visual to look at while listening to the album!
Which is your favourite track on the album, and why?
No Warnings, No Signs is the one all of us in the band are most proud of. That one feels like our best work, we really spent time crafting it and the end result excited us. We all believe that one best showcases our ability as musicians and songwriters. It’s long but it’s dynamic, which helps keep it interesting. Also that song was inspired by the movie John Carpenter’s The Thing, which we’re big fans of and thought would be a cool story to tell in a song!
How would you sum up your sound in three words?
Classic but new.
If you could tour with any band, which would it be?
Metallica or Iron Maiden would be two of the big ones we’d love to tour with! What’s cool about those bands is they’re still very current and active, Iron Maiden just put out a new album and Metallica is working on another one right now as well. That said, any of the artists we grew up listening to would be an honor to play with.
What do you want your listeners to feel when they hit play?
We want our listeners to feel familiar with our sound, but eager to hear more because it’s still fresh to them. Our goal has always been to write the music we want to hear from new bands. It’s music that was meant to be played in concert and on the radio.
How does your music usually come together?
Well we typically will come up with riffs or even songs on our own, and then present our ideas to each other at practice. Whatever is on the table we pick from, and then work on it together to get the structure down and make sure everyone likes it. But some songs came together as a group, like Out of the Shadows, and The Unholy Idol. Those we came up with every bit on the spot, together.
Does New York feed into your sound?
This is an interesting question, because one of our favorite bands KISS is from New York! We consider ourselves a straight to the point, no BS band, which I guess is a pretty New York philosophy!
What’s next for Mainline?
Right now we are motivated towards getting more shows booked so we can play the album live for our fans and anybody who will listen! We’ve also got some more things coming down the pipeline, hopefully we’ll be able to reveal them very soon!
