INTERVIEW: Harvey Jay Dodgson

Hi Harvey, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey guys, massive thanks for having me. Busy! But very well thank you.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Caroline”?

“Caroline” is a track I’ve had for a few years and am so pleased to have finally released it. It’s a song written about the harsher aspects in life, and trying to look at the brighter side of things with the help from summer and it’s memories.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I don’t think it was a particular event which inspired the thought process, although the ending of summer would have played a part in it. Other inspiration would have just been from seeing things around, on the news and what-not – my general opinion on things.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes! And I can’t wait for people to see it. We filmed a music video with the very talented Alex Fountain and it’s looking great. It’s coming out a lot sooner than you think and it’s also not just me featuring …

How was the recording and writing process?

One of the best experiences I’ve had. Four straight days in the studio with the one and only Michael [Mike] Smith at RYP Recordings producing three tracks including “Caroline”. I was taking a music production course at college the time so I was really starting to get into that side of things, and knowing this, Mike made sure to talk and show me through every process from recording to finalising the tracks which inspired me massively. Seeing the song go from being stand alone acoustic to a fully produced single is a dream come true, right before your eyes … or ears ?

What role does Portsmouth play in your music?

Portsmouth and it’s surrounding areas plays a huge role in my music. The sea is something I never want to move away from and it even surprised me when I realised how many times I’ve referenced differently water, the sea etc in the songs I’ve written. It’s also where my whole love’s been. Family, mates, memories – every location holds a different part of my timeline and this influences my music all the time.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

There is new material, yes! Some finished and ready to release, some halfway there, and I’m writing new songs pretty much everyday whether on guitar or my laptop

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Definitely expect new music at the beginning of next year, and definitely know I’m working hard to produce the best songs I can.

What else is happening next in Harvey Jay Dodgson’s world?

I’ve got more gigs coming up this month – one at The Waiting Room in London on the 20th after two days back in the studio with Mike, and another in my hometown, Portsmouth on the 29th. By then I’ll have a fresh new video for “Caroline”, and some more exciting news to come …!
