It needs some extra maintenance
Wood fencing and garden furniture requires some special care to keep it looking good, especially when it comes to painting. The type of wood, and the amount you have to paint it will depend on many factors.
Fences made from cedar are very durable, but they don’t show the wear quite as quickly as other types. If you want your fence to look nice from day one then pre-drill a series of small holes before painting. You can then fill in any of the holes with a putty, or with caulking tape.

Prepare before painting
Before painting your fence panels, it’s a good idea to prepare them for the job. If you apply a single coat of stain or varnish, ensure that you allow plenty of drying time between coats.
Also, ensure you prepare the ground on which you are going to lay your fence panels. If you have gravel in your garden then this is the ideal surface to have your fence painted on. Once you have the panel ready, you should apply a primer onto the top and bottom, both of which need to be covered in a single coat of sealant.
An additional point to consider is the fading that will occur over time – some colors will fade more quickly than others. Most reputable suppliers will let you know whether or not your chosen color will fade over a period of five years. However, you may find that your fence paint will continue to look vibrant after five years even though the original color has faded.
Consider Sunlight
When you are choosing a colored pigment always take into account the amount of sunlight that will reach the surface over the next five years. If you live in an area where there is a lot of sunlight then using light-colored pigment may be suitable. However, if you enjoy spending most of your time in darkness then UV rays will affect the color.
The most suitable pigments to use when you want to cover a wide area include UV resistant and matt. UV resistant paints are suitable for the majority of circumstances, but matt will fade more quickly and should therefore be used where it will be sunny for longer periods of time.
Remember the tools
Painting your fence will generally involve two types of tools: a brush and a roller. A brush will be used to apply the top layer of paint whilst a roller will be used to apply the bottom coat.
The roller will have a number of bristles at different lengths so it is possible to complete a more complex pattern or to complete a simple border. You can buy roller brushes from hardware stores or online. They are available in a variety of different sizes so it is possible to choose one that will fit the height and shape of your fence.
Fence panels usually consist of several panels so it is necessary to consider which colors will suit each panel. You can usually choose a color and then choose two or three adjoining panels that complement it. Two or three tones of the same color should be enough to provide some variation. The most popular combination colors are light silver and cream. This provides a good balance of silver and cream which is one of the most common colors used in fencing.
It gives natural appearance
Another advantage of using a stain is that you can maintain the beautiful grain pattern of the natural wood beneath it. If you leave stains to dry on the fence it is possible to buff the surface and achieve a similar effect.
In order to achieve this, you need to apply the stain evenly all around the surface. Buffing the surface can result in damaged paint and can even cause the pattern to disappear. This means the best fence treatment for wooden fences is to use a water-based stain and then protect it with a barrier layer once it has dried to prevent it from drying into the natural wood underneath.
