Different Types of Roti You Must Try

Roti is a well-known Indian flatbread that serves as a great companion to all vegetable dishes or even curries. Also known as Chapati, it is the second most popular companion after rice in the Indian diet. It is made with whole wheat flour or more popularly known in India as fresh chakki atta. India Gate produces the best and the fresh chakki atta and delivers it all over India. A simple dough is prepared by mixing atta and water to be made into chapatis. In Indian households, Roti is prepared on a flat metal utensil known as Tawa. Akki Roti

Akki Roti is very famous in the South Indian region and made from fresh chakki atta, especially in Karnataka. It is a popular dish that is eaten for breakfast. ‘Akki’ means rice and thus, Akki Roti is made from rice flour that is mixed with vegetables.

  • Chop Carrots, Coriander, and Onions into small pieces according to your preference.
  • Mix them well with 2 cups of Rice Flour in a bowl.
  • Pour some water into the dough to make it soft by kneading it.
  • Take a small round ball of dough and make it into a flat circular shape.
  • Fry the Roti on a Tawa in a little Oil or Butter until it becomes golden and crispy
  • Serve it with Chutney.

Jolada Roti

Jolada Roti is a type of chapati from the state of Maharashtra. It is more popularly known as ‘Jwarichi Bhakri’ in Maharashtra. It is made from Sorghum fresh chakki atta. It is a bit coarser as compared to any other chapatis. Sorghum flour is gluten-free and thus can be easily incorporated into the diet of someone who is allergic to gluten. It is also high in fiber

  • Take 2 cups of sorghum flour (Jowar Atta) and ¼ tsp of salt. Mix them well.
  • Make the dough by slowly pouring in hot water.
  • Roll out balls of dough and then cook on a hot Tawa.
  • Pour some Ghee or Butter on top of it.

Chapati

Chapati is a whole wheat flatbread that is very popular in the Northern Indian region. Chapati means ‘Slap’ in Urdu. The name is given because the Chapati is made by slapping the wheat dough between the hands. These are also known as ‘Phulkas’ as they appear to be like inflated balloons while being cooked.

  • Pour 2 cups of Atta into a deep bowl.
  • Add water accordingly to knead the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • Now, spread little atta on the surface.
  • Take a piece of dough and mould it into a ball.
  • Flatten the spherical ball to make a circular flattened shape.
  • Cook it on a Tawa and turn it over from time to time.
  • Add more flavor to it with some Ghee or Butter.
  • Serve with any side dish.

Makki Di Roti

Makki Di Roti is popular in the states of Punjab and Haryana. Makki Di Roti is made from maize flour. It is mostly eaten with the leafy green spinach dish known as Sarson ka Saag.

  • In a bowl, mix two cups of Maize Flour with Ajwain and a pinch of salt.
  • Pour some water accordingly and knead the dough.
  • Divide and roll the dough into small balls to prepare the flatbread accordingly.
  • Flatten it out in a circular shape.
  • Cook it on a Tawa and turn it over from time to time.
  • Garnish with Ghee or Butter. Ready to serve!

Ragi Roti

Ragi Roti is another type of roti that is prepared by mixing Ragi flour with chilies and onions. It is more popular in the southern states of India.

  • Mix 1 cup of Ragi Flour, chopped Onions, Chillies, Curry Leaves, Salt, and Water to make a dough.
  • Divide the dough into small balls and flatten it out to make Rotis.
  • Now, lightly grease Tawa with cooking oil.
  • Let the roti fry on the Tawa.
  • Serve with chutney!

Rumali Roti

Rumali Rotis are made by mixing whole wheat flour and refined flour with water. They are soft and also easy to make. Rumali Rotis were introduced by Mughal Emperors and since then the Roti type is famous.

  • Mix together 3 cups of Whole Wheat Flour with 1 cup of Refined Flour.
  • Add Salt and 1 Tsp oil to the mixture.
  • Add warm milk and knead for about 15 minutes to make the dough.
  • Cover the dough with oil and a moist cloth.
  • Roll small balls of dough and flatten them out thinly.
  • Heat a Tawa and then turn it upside down as the roti will be cooked on the outer side.
  • Sprinkle some water and then spread out the roti.
  • Cook on both sides properly and Serve.

Missi Roti

Missi Roti is considered to be a healthy option to be consumed during lunch or dinner. Made with mixing gram flour and atta, this roti is full of fibres and nutrients.

  • Mix Whole Wheat Flour and Gram Flour according to your preference.
  • Add Spices, Onions, and Curry leaves.
  • To form a soft dough, add some water and knead it to rest for a few minutes.
  • Make balls from the dough and flatten it out.
  • Place it on a hot Tawa.
  • Garnish it with some Ghee or Butter over it.
  • Cook well on both sides and serve.

Bajra Ki Roti

Bajra ki Roti is very popular in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. It is made with pearl millet flour which makes it high in fibre and protein. It is also gluten-free which makes it suitable for a gluten-free diet.

  • Make the dough by mixing 2 cups of pearl millet flour with water, salt, and vegetable oil.
  • Keep the dough aside for 1 hour.
  • Round the balls of dough and flatten them out using a rolling pin into a circular shape.
  • Now, cook the roti on a Tawa.
  • Garnish it with Butter or Ghee.
  • Serve with chutney or a side dish.
