SINGLE REVIEW: Mind Spin by ECHOLILY

The third single from Echolily follows in the wake of two unanimously praised tracks, Under the Clocks (Stay) and Higher. The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter solidifies her universal support with Mind Spin, a lo-fi excursion into the indie dance realm that retains all the distinctive embellishments of Echolily’s indelible style yet infused with a heightened immediacy and pulsating energy. Utilising the same extensive palette in her sonic armoury, Echolily creates a mesmerising and thoroughly incandescent joyride into the world of altered states—astutely calibrated to a rhythmic and poetic wash of contemporary sound. With an extensive list of previous radio ads to her credit, including SBS Chill DAB, Flow FM Network, and Triple R, Echolily’s new track is a multidimensional foray into a musical terrain that utilises technology to full effect yet also imbues the work with a raw edge. As Echolily says about the origins of the new song, ‘I wrote Mind Spin after a fun wine-filled night out with a few girlfriends who were all heartbroken at the same time. In vino veritas, am I right? Wrote the whole song in one night. Mind Spin is about the different stages of intoxication, where inhibitions are lost, and true colours unravel.’ The true colours and kaleidoscopic tones exhibited here are beautifully relayed by Echolily’s disarming and endearing vocal. An array of synth-based sounds and machine beats counter Echolily’s enticing vocal performance, whimsical yet strident, with an assortment of background vocal textures adding to the overall colour. Mind Spin is an experimental pop-focused release for this emerging maverick of Australian music. ‘The first draft was actually more trippy beach summer lo-fi kinda vibes. I was not too happy with that. I needed more character to the song. So I sent it over to my dear friend, Andrew. He changed the beat and gave an alternative dance vibe to the song. Loved it so much, we decided to stick with it!’ This merging of genres is the key to Mind Spin’s effectiveness, revealing another side to Echolily’s multi-layered artistry. With over 30k Spotify followers and over 100k streams, Echolily’s impact is as assured as her musical endeavours.
