Hi Tori, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’m just starting a new year at Berklee college of music. I just got my first apartment in Boston, so I’ve got a lot of time to focus on writing and my music.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Alone”?
Alone is the oldest song on the Album. I wrote it when I was only 14 years old. I have a lot of mixed feelings about that one, probably because if I wrote it again now I think I’d make a lot of different lyrical choices. But the musical aspects of it are some of my favorites. I think the band sounds amazing, and I had a lot of fun with the harmonies on that one.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It was less of an event and more of just this feeling like there was some things I was going through alone. Even though I had family and friends, there were still things that I had to figure out on my own
Any plans to release a video for the track?
Not at the moment but you never know!
The single comes off your new album Sonder – what’s the story behind the title?
Sonder is the feeling you get when you realize that every person around you is living a life as vivid and complex as your own with their own struggles and challenges. I’m not a religious person, so this has always been what motivates me to do the right thing, and the concept was in mind when writing many of the songs on the album.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote the album over 3 years, along with many other songs, and when I decided to make the album, I picked my favorites and the ones that worked together and the band played best. I recorded the album at Wild Sound studio in northeast Minneapolis. We recorded all the instruments first with me singing along just for scratch vocals, usually 2 songs per session, then I went back in on each song a few days later and dive deep into the vocals and make sure everything’s the best it can be. On a couple songs my guitarist, Marty, came back in to do the same with his guitar part. It was a super great
What role does Minneapolis play in your music?
Moving to Minneapolis is what really got me into music. I’d always dreamed of someday being a rockstar, but had no idea how I’d get there. But when I came to Minneapolis, there were so many opportunities and such a great community. It really gave me the space to actually become a musician.
I also grew up listening to The Current and local artists like Dessa, Jeremy Messersmith, and GRRRL PRTY, and listening to these artists probably shaped the way that I write and think about the world.
What aspect of love and heartache did you get to explore on this record?
Since the album was written over such a long period of time, (in teenager years at least) there are no two songs on the album that are about the same person. Think Twice was written about a first big heartbreak (with hints of infidelity), Learned From Your Lies is about finally saying no to the guy you couldn’t stop going back to. Cut Me Loose is about a guy who wouldn’t make up his mind. Cold Blooded is about learning how to move on from the people who’ve hurt you in the past and open up to something new.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Some of the other songs are about other relationships in my life, with friends, role models, and myself. Constellations is a love song, not to a person, but to my high school, Perpich, which was a really weirdly awesome place to be a young artist. I think in general the songs are about learning and growing and figuring out how to be kind and open without leaving yourself too open to being hurt.
What else is happening next in Tori Evans’ world?
My life is really just focusing on music for the first time ever, so I’m going to learn as much as I can at Berklee and write a lot and make the most of this time I have to really focus on what I love while I can, because I don’t know how long I’ll be lucky enough to be able to.
