Hi Brian, welcome back to VENTS! How have you been?
good. i never get sick and i’m not taking any flu shots thank you.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hate Is A Special Feeling”?
i like to channel my anger into getting work done. it seems to work best for me. there is never an altruistic reason why i do anything.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
life events that we all have. being bussed to black schools in the 60’s was one for me. no one gets a free ride. everyone has book to write if you make it to 60.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
i bought a green screen and had fun with it. i also used fiverr for the dancing girl and the special effects.
Why naming the album after this song in particular?
i like albums that are named after the title track. it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
How was the recording and writing process?
the recording process was with a real band. i usually make up place holder lyrics just to keep the ball rolling. there are only a few takes for each song.
What role does California play in your music?
i’m a 5th generation californian going back to the 1800’s. i don’t surf, skateboard or have tattoos. i am heavily into car culture though.
What aspect of hate did you get to explore on this record?
just getting to say “hate” over and over was therapeutic to me.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
i hate lyrics that say oh baby, oh yeah, holding on, rockin, dancin. i don’t like bob dylan double meaning lyrics. i like linear lyrics that country, punk and rap music use. i don’t like lyrics like comfortably numb which really is about heroin. i wish jim carroll could have rewrote the lyrics to comfortably numb and made it more linear, in your face.
What else is happening next in Electric Peace’s world?
i’m remixing the electric peace catalog. it’s an amazing time we live in with the technology that allows a “do over” on old muddy mixes.
