Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yeah, no one wants to give up on a friend. The track Drunk Lil Guy is about having no other choice. It also gives an uncommon take on culturally supported alcoholism, how a self-destructive coping strategy can be misconstrued for a good time, and then enabled to fuel everyone else’s evening. What I see when that song ends is a drunk little guy, a large smile stretching his face, eyes completely hollow and unsmiling, hoisted up on a bar stool, the entire bar on their feet, cheering, carrying him off into a pitch black night.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes, we’re in the process of developing that now actually.
Why naming the album after this song in particular?
The experience surrounding that track is pretty uncomfortable, but if I give in to that knee-jerk ego reaction of hate, I deny the reality that we all have part of that person in us, and as much as I’d prefer to ‘otherize’ that alcoholic baby gorilla, the truth is we all struggle to digest trauma, and have our struggle come out in unhealthy ways that damage others, and I wanted to own that. I think we all need to own that, otherwise we’re just floundering out there, adding hurt. So I decided to lift that track up.
How was the recording and writing process?
This record was born between a quarantine and a wildfire. We had plans to record it live, and had studio time booked for March, 2020. For obvious reasons we pivoted into tracking the record piece by piece down in Stayton, Oregon. We had three weeks of wringing the best out of ourselves, and the producer we were working with made sure of that. We managed to wrap it up just as the West coast was going up in flames. I love every part of this record, but I’m most happy with the mix. Tony Lash made such an intimate and warm mix it’s almost claustrophobic in its purity. There’s a lot of clean, over compressed sound in the indie genre right now and I really like that we didn’t cave to the flavor of the month.
What aspect of modern relationship did you get to explore on this record?
Hahaha, yeah, just about the only thing that gets my pen on a page is exploring the contemporary twist on our more base drives: budding relationships strangled by the judgement of others, that cliched dwindling attention span corrupting a new partner, how who think we are is much more fragmented and situational, watching teenagers deal with and ultimately shirk responsibility in the death of a friend, responsibility shirked in the slow decay of ourselves, slipping back into someones bed when you know better, the various ways low res misogyny surfaces, that moment you know your partner is trying to wriggle out of owning what theyve done and you cant let it go, that moment your partner has made a poor choice and you let them live in it.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I mean, thats really it; you fuck me up, you’re getting a song.
What else is happening next in Noah Kite’s world?
I’m getting back into acting, with things like this: https://vimeo.com/585124626/84516ce149
Preparing for another record, shooting music videos for the current record.
I’ve got a Belgian tour for May 2022 on the books, and fingers crossed the world doesnt catch fire again like one of those trick birthday candles.
