INTERVIEW: SUSPYRIA

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been great! We are so excited to see everybody reacting to our new single. It’s awesome to have a supportive network of fans enjoying the music.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Damage”?

Sure! The Damage is a song about a toxic relationship. It’s a passive observation of a couple who don’t recognise their own toxic behaviour and how it’s negatively impacted themselves and the loved ones around them. We really dug in deep with some emotions to find the best way to express the heavy topic of the song.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Our vocalist and his partner went through a miscarriage last year. This was a big inspiration for the emotional drive behind the theme of loss for the song.

It wasn’t written specifically about this event, but the theme and contention of the song is heavily influenced by the shockwaves of emotion that were channelled from it.

Terence – “It was heart breaking and one of the most difficult things I’ve ever been through.”

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

You can watch the music video for our single The Damage on our YouTube channel: Suspyria Official.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process happened almost a year before the song was recorded. It was super easy; our vocalist wrote the song almost entirely himself within a day or two. First the instruments were laid out, then a late night staying up brainstorming ideas and writing lyrics. After that the song was demoed and set aside for the next release.

Once we got into the studio, that was also a smooth process.

Our producer Chris Vernon is awesome and super easy to work with. A couple days smashing out takes, adding in midi orchestral parts in the bridge… and the song was complete.

What role does Australia play in your music?

It’s more than just the place we live, it’s a stunning and beautiful country. It’s relentless and exquisite in its rugged terrain that spans from scorching deserts to icy mountains, to dense rainforest full of native wildlife. It brings a level of inspiration that we are truly grateful for.

The vastly multicultural society impacts us. The music scene over here is awesome, but it does feel hard to fit in. Either you must be a super heavy metalcore band, new wave pop punk/Alt rock, or indie rock. Doesn’t feel like there is much of an in-between.

We wanted to bring something to the music scene here we felt was missing. And hopefully we are managing to do that.

How has Breaking Benjamin and Stone Sour influenced your writing?

Both bands impacted our song writing in different ways. Breaking Benjamin showed us how to structure powerful songs with basic chord patterns and great melodies. They never stray too far into experimental territory, but they manage to keep a consistent approach to song writing that really showcases their sound in a tight packed punch that appeals to a wide variety of people.

Stone Sour on the other hand, they have huge dynamics in their sound. They really showed us how to think a bit more outside the box with certain rhythms and riffs, and especially vocal melodies.

Corey Taylor is a great lyricist and vocalist. He delivers with conviction and clarity which we have always admired.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

We certainly do have a lot of material ready to go behind the scenes. We have a full-length record worth of songs ready to go. Unfortunately, due to an overt extended lockdown in Melbourne, the brakes are on momentarily.

We already have our next couple singles mixed and mastered and sent back to us. They sound insane and we cannot wait to share them.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Release dates are currently being planned but nothing set in stone as of yet.

We do have a title in mind for our upcoming release. But it’s all a bit hush-hush right now until this lockdown In Melbourne boils over.

What else is happening next in Suspyria’s world?

Aside from Riots, protests, and an earthquake the other day?

For real though, there was an earthquake, which is very odd for us. They NEVER happen here.

The band is just working as hard as we can writing new material and venting the emotion of the current events into our music. It’s how we are all coping.

There are a lot of heavy emotions floating around due to conflicts in the choices our government is making here. People are angry and easily triggered.
