‘Tis the season for Netflix renewals it seems and a good thing it is, too: After all, I’d much rather send back reports from the Entertainment Front of a favorite series getting picked up for an addition season versus falling under the dreaded ax of cancellation. Thankfully, news today from our Masters and Johnson muchachos over at The Hollywood Reporter has given ye olde intrepid reporter the excuse to bust out the proverbial party favors as the fan-favorite show Sex/Life has been given the gift of a sophomore season thanks to the benevolent Overlords of Netflix.
If you’re not already tuning into creator Stacey Rukeyser’s drama Sex/Life, you’re missing out: Taking its inspiration from the novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men by author BB Easton, the show deals with a woman who has a life that appears on the surface to be set and full of smooth sailing – Living in the suburbs as a wife and mother of two, Billie Connelly (a brilliant and understated Sarah Shahi) wakes up one day to the realization that she still longs for the rousing times and experiences that she shared with an ex-boyfriend. This late-in-the-day epiphany naturally stirs up all sorts of drama-rama and where the Wheel of Fortune will ultimately stop at for our protagonist and those closest to her remains to be seen.
The announcement by Netflix of a season two renewal comes only a few months after Sex/Life premiered on the streamer and continues the overall trend of content-starved platforms doing super-quick renewals of any shows that point towards a potential and stone-cold hit. Netflix pointed towards the healthy viewing numbers as illustrated by its internal metrics as a big reason they are returning to the buffet table for seconds.
In a press release, Sex/Life maestro Stacey Rukeyser praised the renewal, saying that “Sex/Life is a dream come true. To create a show about empowered female sexuality that has entranced so many millions of viewers is not only immensely fun but also incredibly gratifying. When I think about all the women who have reached out from all over the world to say that the show speaks to them in a deeply personal way, I am so inspired. I’m thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to continue telling this story for Billie, and for all of us.”
Season two of Sex/Life is expected to reunite most of the cast from the first season and will begin production in Toronto shortly.
