4 tips: How to take care of your clothes

There’s one thing common to us all – everyone has to get dressed in the morning. Choosing what exact style you’d wear is a process many people find enjoyment in, while others will wear whatever as long as the clothes are clean.

No matter what type of person you are, we can all agree that it is very important to take proper care of your garments to improve their longevity and the overall look. For example, an overstretched tank top will cover you and make you warm and comfy, but by wearing it you are risking looking extremely sloppy. If you’d like to make the sloppy look a thing of the past by improving the way you handle your own clothes, consider trying out the following tips.

Respect the delicates

There’s a reason why the delicates are called so – they require to be treated especially gently. The ultimate way to protect your undergarments from getting destroyed in the washing machine is to just not use the machine when cleaning the delicates. To substitute, a much better idea is to wash them by hand. Soak the laundry in cool water and add some detergent.

Leave it to soak for a couple of hours. Make sure to check on the clothing and swirl the laundry around occasionally. When three to four hours pass, rinse and hang to air dry. Another very important piece of advice – be careful not to mix the differently coloured items.

Dry clean your clothes

Proper care of your clothes includes occasionally bringing them to the dry cleaner’s. However, it is important to be smart about which clothes you choose to get dry cleaned. For example, there is truly no need to dry clean a regular T-shirt, but if you’d like to get a fancy suit ready for a special event, a good dry cleaning service will make sure your suit looks exceptional. Also pay attention to the care label attached and make sure to only dry clean the items which are recommended for this type of treatment.

What is also interesting to know is that some cleaning services use starch to treat the clothing, while others don’t. The use of starch has been a controversial matter in the industry with some arguing for and some against the use of this method. Take a look at the linked article to learn more about the pros and cons of starched clothes and find out whether starch is a good option for your care preferences.

Be careful not to overwash

Shockingly, there are some items of clothing which can be overwashed. Too much cleaning can be a bad thing, as it turns out. The item which tends to be overcleaned the most are trousers and jeans. You should wash your pants every two to three months, depending on how often you wear them. Certain jeans, such as Levi’s, should be washed even less frequently. Of course, if you stain them badly or you start noticing an unpleasant smell, pop them into the washing machine.

Wash your wool on cool

Now that the fall season is starting, it’s time for you to pull out your favourite woolen pieces out of your closet. Even though wool is one of the commonly used materials, rarely does anyone know how to properly care for their woolen garments. It’s time to change that.

If you have messed up in the past and washed your favourite sweater on a high temperature program, you know exactly what we’re talking about – cleaning with hot water shrinks wool. So to make sure your wool looks as good as brand new, double check that you are washing it on the cool setting. Also, when it comes to storing the clothes, fold the woolen garments, don’t hang them since this practice leads to them stretching.
