Hi David, welcome to VENTS once again!
Thanks! Glad to be here again!
Can you talk to us more about your single “Balustrade”?
I’d be happy to.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Just life. I was recalling an emotional disconnect in a relationship, and I often think of inanimate objects as emotional symbols bearing silent witness to life events. I suppose it’s a form of emotional or psychological displacement except that the displacement is onto an object rather than a person. It provides a safety valve, I guess. People can feel, objects can’t, and as an object goes, a balustrade is deliberately imbued with strength and physical beauty; but there’s also some emotional presence of its creator, and therein lies its mystery.
Any plans to release a video for the track?
A professional video is under production. I’m going for something cinematic, very noir, and so it’s being shot largely on film rather than digital in a few amazing locations. A production still is attached. It hasn’t been seen or posted anywhere yet, or sent to anyone – until now.
The single comes off your new project Lit – what’s the story behind the title?
It’s the answer to a call for action that I beg for in an earlier song, “Light the Rockets,” the closing line of which is “come on and light the fuse in my face.” In other words, take action, take the dare, and if you need me to do it with you and do it first, you got it. I’ll even let you help me do it so you can see firsthand that there’s nothing to fear.
How was the recording and writing process?
Both went smoothly and with a lot of mutual energy. I think some creative endeavors almost know what they are before their creators do. Songs often drop into my head whole or almost whole. That was the case this time, too, but the rehearsals and sessions just bolted from the chute with an uncommon melding of power and grace. Some of that no doubt has a lot to do with the experience and musical prowess of the band.
When will the full project be released?
Single in early October (although it is available now on Bandcamp) and EP in late October.
What role does Florida play , if any, in your music?
None that I’m overtly aware of, other than maybe supplying the urge for escape. ; )
What else is happening next in David A’s world?
Seeing if these incredible musicians I’m working with in the studio are up for live performances. If not, finding the players who will be, then booking all the live shows I can get.
