Every show is someone’s favorite. It’s that simple guiding light I attempt to keep in mind when writing about the axing of a television series, even if I don’t have a particular dog in the race; especially if I don’t have a dog in said race. After all, ye olde scribbler of pop culture goings-on has had many-a favorite series cut down at the height of their glory: My So-Called Life, Homefront and Werewolf instantly come to mind as having particularly painful and abrupt endings that, decades after the fact, I’m still in therapy over (“How could you take off with Jordan Catalano after discovering Brian Krakow was madly in love with you, Angela?!?”). Never fear though: My therapist assures me that any day now I should be able to remove my bib. AHEM.
But back to the point at hand: Cancellations of TV shows truly can suck for the hardcore fans and it’s with that bit of salient wisdom at my disposal that I break the gloomy days as reported on by our buddies over at Variety that the critically applauded series Derry Girls is officially pushing up daisies. If it’s any consolation, Lisa McGee – the creator of the series – had always planned on concluding things in a three season arc.
For those of you late to the Derry Girls party, this Channel 4 Northern Ireland comedic charmer about a 16 year old girl and her circle of friends coming of age during the 1990s in a world filled with check points and heavily armed police has captivated a small but loyal contingent of fans.
McGee took to Twitter this very day to break the news of the show’s cancelation, saying that “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. Derry Girls is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly…very slowly…start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase – which was a small, magical window of time. Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved…”
Season 3 of Derry Girls has been delayed due to COVID-19, but is forthcoming for all of its fans out there sometime in 2022.
