Today Constant Smiles , a collective led by Ben Jones, announces the forthcoming release Paragons , their Sacred Bones Records debut, due out on November 12, 2021 . On Paragons , Constant Smiles has synthesized the various sounds they’ve explored previously—like shoegaze, dream pop, and psych—into a dazzling new form altogether. Ben Greenberg’s production pushes Jones’ voice starkly to the front, revealing a subtle seventies singer/songwriter influence in the songs, and resulting in the collective’s most dynamic album to date.
With the announcement comes the release of the beautifully melancholy first single from the album, “ Run to Stay ” accompanied by an unsettling video that the band themselves directed, featuring the members, in separate scenarios, all at night in the rain, moving through various forms of transportation — trudging through waters on foot, driving a car, and riding a motorbike; with each, it’s not entirely clear if they’re headed towards a destination, or running away from something.
As Ben Jones shares: “‘Run To Stay’ is about not being present in the moment, and struggling with antisocial tendencies. Like when you’re at a party or talking to someone but you’re only half paying attention to what they’re saying because you can’t stop thinking about other things you need to do. Or when you avoid hanging out with friends because you want to work on music or something, but nothing comes to you so you just end up sitting around all day.”
Regarding the video, Jones goes on to say: “We were trying to capture that anxious feeling of always needing to be somewhere or be doing something else but realizing that it isn’t ever that important.”
