INTERVIEW: Richard

Hi Richard, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m doing well thanks! It’s been great to have a creative outlet and keep playing music during these strange times

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hands”?

Hands has been one of my favourite songs that I’ve written to date. I gave myself permission to play around with the complexities and colourful sides of music. I love to listen to music that makes you want to get up and dance. Keeping that vibe in mind, I incorporated some latín influenced beats to song and love how it turned out.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Hands wasn’t so much inspired by one event, but was based more on the fact that I love being out on the town and dancing with friends and new people I meet. I wanted to write something that I could hear on a night out, even more so write something I could jive with on stage.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Most definitely! The official video has been released and is on YouTube as well as the lyric video. I had been trying to spend more time learning how to use green screen and creating videos on my own. The lyric video was a fun challenge for me!  I just recorded a live off the floor acoustic version of Hands with my band and will have that out in the next two weeks for you all to see.

How was the recording and writing process?

I wrote Hands with Brian Howes, Ryan Stewart and JVP. The guys are like brothers to me. There has to be a level of trust and vulnerability when you get in a room to create. I had a blast recording this song and the rest of the record. This process had definitely made me a better musician.

What role does BC play in your music?

I don’t know if people are aware of the amazingly talented artists, writers and producers that live here in BC. Being able to collaborate with that caliber of talent in your own back yard is pretty cool. We have a pretty tight nit music community.

With the large reception from your music – does that put any pressure on as you work on new material or rather the opposite?

I am conscious of what impact music has on my life and want to be able to give my audience something to create memories with. My record has a mix of relationships gone wrong to up beat feel good songs. I guess my goal is to be able to relate to others and have them relate to me.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

It Definitely does!! I have a great collection of songs that I am half way through. I can’t wait share it with everyone. I should hopefully have the record completed by the new year

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Our goal is to have everything put together and ready to put out by April 2022. I am bouncing a few ideas around but haven’t settled on a title as of yet.

What else is happening next in Richard’s world?

At the moment I have a live stream tour I’ll be on over the next few weeks.

Otherwise, I’ve been writing and can’t wait to share these songs with the world
