Emmy Winner and “Schitt’s Creek” Creator Dan Levy Finds New Home at Netflix

What a way to wrap up a work-week! Courtesy of our always on the prowl for a scoop (and we ain’t talking ice cream, friends!) pals over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the news today that Dan Levy, the celebrated creator of Schitt’s Creek (and, incidentally, the son of acting legend Eugene Levy), has set up camp at the Happy Hunting Grounds that creatives refer to as Netflix. How did this all come to be, you might ask? Read on Dear and Constant Reader, read on…

With his creative deal at The House That Uncle Walt Built (also known as Disney) less than a year out from hitting the ol’ expiration brakes, mega-talent Dan Levy was announced today as having signed a lucrative deal with Netflix that might make Jim Cameron more than a little envious. Part of that new pact with Netflix begins immediately, and that would be the film aspect of the contract Levy signed. The other component – the television side of the equation – kicks off into hyperspace in July of 2022 once his three year servitude to The House of Mouse goes the way of All-Flash. This newly announced three-four year marriage between the behemoth streaming platform and the creative guru of Schitt’s Creek is striking in that it allows him a certain latitude creatively that he did not enjoy over at Disney. To wit, Levy has already proclaimed that his first project for Netflix will be a romantic comedy film that he’ll not only star in, but one in which he’ll also write, direct and produce. Now that’s ambition!

In a press release announcing their acquisition of Levy to their growing stable of talent, Netflix Big Wheel Scott Stuber (who also happens to be the companies Head of Global Film) said that “Dan Levy is an incredible all-around creative talent, who thoughtfully approaches every story with a meaningful perspective. His work on Schitt’s Creek charmed audiences around the world and we’re thrilled to partner and create new films and shows with Dan.”

Netflix and Levy have had a comfortable relationship for some time, accentuated even more once the streamer began airing past episodes of the CBS series Schitt’s Creek a move that attracted even more fans to the venerable series.

Disney’s loss is certainly Netflix’s gain, as the stalwart Levy was quick to remind everyone in his own press release regarding the deal on Wednesday: “Netflix offered Schitt’s Creek a second home at just the right time and opened the doors to a whole new audience for us. Watching the show thrive there has only enhanced my excitement about continuing to tell specific, meaningful stories with them in both TV and feature film. A full circle moment.”

Congrats to Dan Levy on the Netflix nuptials – We’ll send along a toaster with best wishes!
