Hi Freddie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi! Thanks for me having me. I’m well, thank you.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Place In The Sky”?
Sure, well it’s my first full band track release with drums and guitars etc and having that energy feels really good. I always want to come out with a contrast in dynamic and energy, whether that be within the song or between songs.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yeah, it’s really a song about feeling numb throughout lockdown and the energy really comes from that frustration.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Not yet, but Harry who drums on the track is also an ace videographer and we’ve been fleshing out some ideas that we’re quite excited about.
How was the recording and writing process?
Really fun, I was listening to ‘Dustland Fairytale’ by Killers and some Radiohead piano led tracks that had interesting middle-8 sections and was attracted to the driving energy they were providing. Subsequently, some piano chords on the piano came to life and then the melody – it all kind of came at once alongside a lot of the lyrics that are in the final track. When recording it in London, the piano went down first with a guide vocal and then the drums provided the backbone all the way through. Stumbling upon the guitar riff was one of our favourite moments.
How has Radiohead and Coldplay influenced your writing?
Massively, they’re my two favourite bands (in particular their earlier albums like Parachutes and The Bends). I grew up with them and their ability to write tracks with emotional punch is second to none in my opinion.
Does the new single mean we can expect some new material – how’s that coming along?
Absolutely, we have 5 tracks to come as singles and an EP and I’m excited to get them out now! It’s taken a while!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’d say about 6 weeks between each release.
What else is happening next in Freddie Mercer’s world?
I’m currently prepping the live set with the chaps and writing some new tracks for next years project.
