INTERVIEW: BRIO

BRIO (US) is a 25 year old producer from Los Angeles known for his infectious drum patterns and deep groovy baselines. He began producing back in 2015 and has played at many clubs in the Los Angeles area, leading to his biggest club debut at Avalon Nightclub. He began producing back in 2015 and has been busy honing his craft, leading up to his debut release on Unlearn Records – two moody, hypnotic tech house rollers that mark him out as one to watch.

Hi Brio, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, how’s it going? I’ve been doing pretty good, thanks for asking. You know, just been working, trying to stay busy through these crazy times we’re living at the moment. Trying to stay healthy the best we can.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “W.F.I.”?

Yeah man, it’s my first official release ever, so that’s pretty exciting. I’m hyped because Unlearn is actually the first label I’ve ever been signed to, so you can imagine my excitement to be a part of the movement going for the team. You know, I’m very thankful that I got this opportunity to kickstart my music career. It’s a groovy track and I’m excited for you guys to hear it.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

To be honest, the idea for the song was just kind of instant. I came up with the idea, coming across the vocal in a vocal pack I purchased. I always try to find a nice catchy vocal for my tracks whether it’s a phrase or nice hook, I really take my time finding the right vocal. I stumbled across this particular one and it grabbed me from the start. It was a small phrase but once  I heard it, the song kind of started building itself in my head. So it was just something instant that came to me after discovering the vocal, I worked on the drum pattern myself, I wanted something with swing and something that would punch through a speaker. And the synths in the track are actually two different chord samples chopped up and blended together; I found the two samples on Splice. The song was honestly made in just one big jam session.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

I would totally be up for the idea if Unlearn wants to do something with it in the future. it’s definitely something I’ve never done before, so I think it’d be pretty fun to do. I’m curious what the outcome of that would be, I think it’d be a fun shoot.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was definitely easier for me.You know like i mentioned before, this particular track kind of came to me instantly and was recorded in a single  jam session, so there wasn’t too much stress on that end.  I tend to be good at producing and writing tracks more than I am at mixing down and mastering my stuff. The label took care of most of the mastering services for me, and they did an amazing job with it.

What role does LA play in your music?

Oh man, LA inspires my music a lot. In my opinion the club scene out here is a lot more intimate than anywhere else I’ve been, and that’s whether on the dancefloor or Djing. I’m really into a lot of the after hours parties that get hosted out here and that’s always been kind of the sound that I aim for. I aim for a club setting and when I write my music, I go about it by writing stuff I feel like would compliment a lot of the club settings out here. House music is alive and well in LA and it’s probably the biggest its ever been out here, right now. The scene is just different out here, a lot more intimate.

How has Duke Dumont and Eric Pydz influence your writing?

These two have definitely inspired my music a lot. Not only are they two of the most listened to artists but their producing strategies have helped me out over the years plenty. One of my favorite tracks from Duke is, “Robert Talking” which has more of  a deep house vibe. I’d say that one song really sparked my interest in producing. When I started Djing, I was leaning more towards that route, the deep house vibe. Obviously when you compare Duke to Eric, these are two totally different styles. Eric inspires more of my darker side, but I connect to him because I try to aim for melodic elements, darker vocals,  as well in my music. I feel like my music is a blend within the two styles. I produce tech-house that will either be a darker vibe with soulful-housey elements or vice versa, more upbeat with darker elements. There’s no doubt these two are at the top of my list in terms  of inspirations but I mean I got plenty, the list can go on.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Most definitely! I’m always working on new music, as far as this year goes,  I know the label is fully booked on releases. I have sent over a few other demos this year though so hopefully next year you can expect some new tunes!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

For this year, this release will be the only one I’m looking forward to that’s official. I have sent out to other labels as well but I haven’t secured any deals yet, so we just have to wait and see about those, you never know what can happen in the next couple months.

What else is happening next in BRIO’s world?

Actually aside from music, I plan to be earning my degree by the end of the year, so that’s pretty exciting too. This might come as ironic to some, but I’m actually in the process of earning a degree in Criminology. As far as my plans for after that. I haven’t really decided yet. I honestly hope to land some gigs this summer to rinse out new material I’ve worked on, so hopefully some shows in the near future!
