SINGLE REVIEW: Do You Think That I’m A Fool? by Caroline

The first impression of caroline is that she’s endearing. Her new single “Do You Think That I’m A Fool?” feels very much like a teenage girl shaking off the opinions of others and trying to find her power. She has a pretty voice that lends itself well to the upbeat pop track, although the subject matter of the song is a little deeper than it seems on the surface. “Do You Think That I’m A Fool?” explores caroline’s battle with anorexia and dispelling her inner demons. The lyrics are just as much about telling other people to buzz off as they are about telling herself to stop listening to her own self-sabotage. There’s something vulnerable and sweet about her vocals and her willingness to share her journey with others.

While the song itself feels well produced, the music video released with it looks super homemade. However, it  just adds to caroline’s charm. The whole song is about her building her confidence and becoming comfortable with herself, so filming herself just being out in the world feels like she’s trying to open up. It’s also kind of nice to see a young girl actually look like a young girl instead of being heavily made up and over sexualized. The video makes you feel like you’re watching something your friend made and is proud of. And it makes her that much more relatable to her target audience. She’s already gained some traction on Spotify and Tik Tok with her track “Already There,” which was released last year. In a similar way to “Do You Think That I’m A Fool?” caroline authentically pours her heart out into the song, drawing people in.

caroline mentioned in an interview that she wants her music to make people feel a sense of “hope and inclusivity.” “Do You Think That I’m A Fool?” fits that bill, especially because the song can be interpreted a number of ways, reaching a multitude of different emotions. It could be viewed as someone calling out their inner saboteur or letting people in their lives know that they don’t care about how they’re seen anymore. It could also be from the perspective of someone leaving somebody that isn’t good for them, whether it be romantic, platonic, or familial. The best songs are the ones that have lots of avenues to drive down.

Between the fun beat and the catchy chorus, “Do You Think That I’m A Fool?” sounds radio ready. It’s relatable and joyful and would blend seamlessly with the current pop sound. (It’s no wonder though, as it was produced by Dan Brook of BMI, who has worked with Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato.) I think it’s a song that a lot of people, young and old, could relate to. Lots of people are battling low self-esteem and crushing themselves under the weight of what they think is expected of them. caroline reminds us that it’s okay to free ourselves from the shackles of other people’s expectations, and to let up on the pressure we put on ourselves to be perfect.
