1. Hi Sam, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Appreciate you having me! I’ve been really well thanks. Very excited to begin the roll-out of this new project we’ve kept secret for the last 8 months.
2. Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Dream About A Girl”?
Yeah, it’s a whole new world for me. The song itself is probably one of my best efforts at a traditional “pop song,” yet. I originally wrote the song as a ballad but was convinced to give it some real tempo and bring it into a brighter realm, which I’m very happy we did.
3. Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The title and inspiration for this song came from a dream that I had. I even woke up with some of the melodies in my head, which felt strange. At its core, the song is essentially about coming to terms with how bad the state of a relationship has become. The dream I had was about a fictitious female character who felt to be pulling me away from my current life, and into a new one. It was strange because the feeling was so vivid but I couldn’t really identify her face. It was peculiar. I woke up in a bit of a panic and went into the studio that morning.
4. Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Absolutely. This whole new era is incredibly visual in nature and I intend to have accompanying visuals for every song on the project. I love film and have always wanted to have a heavy-hand in anything we make.
5. How was the recording and writing process?
It was great but quite different from the norm. We began the song in Toronto with Andrew Martino and Alexandra Soumalias. The three of us wrote the brunt of the song over a few hours and then we brought in Joey Verskotzi (LA) to help with final production. Typically, I love to have my hands all over everything I work on so producing a song over ZOOM was definitely challenging for me. Big shoutouts to Marty and Joey for their patience with me.
6. What was it like working with Andrew Martino and Joey Verskotzi and how did those relationships develop?
Andrew “Marty,” and Joey are two of the coolest individuals that music has introduced me to. Both guys just do a really good job at bringing the “artist” out of me. They respect my vision and give me the space to be myself, but also keep the ship on course. From the artist perspective, that’s really the whole dance of a good producer. It’s not easy and they both do it effortlessly. On top of all that, both of their musical tastes/capabilities are incredibly influential in the crafting of the production.
7. How much influence did they have on the song?
As much, if not more, than myself. It was Marty’s idea to give the song tempo and a big backbeat. It never would’ve made a good first single if we didn’t make that decision from jump street. I buy the groceries, but those guys are the chefs.
8. What role does Toronto play in your music?
A massive role. Toronto’s current status in the music industry has literally defined my entire life. The pace at which we’re exporting Hot 100 charting artists is out of control and there is really no better city to be from right now. Obviously Drake and The Weeknd are kind of our fearless leaders but this city is so filled with talent it’s actually kind of gross. Very intimidating at times but it keeps me sharp.
9. Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
You can absolutely expect new material. The project is done. Mastered. It’s a massive step up from my debut release (2019’s Vicelove) and I am seriously excited to release it to the world.
10. Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The title has been decided – but for the moment, it’s confidential. The top of 2022 is the most likely time frame for the release. That’s the first time I’ve said that out loud…
11. What else is happening next in Sam Drysdale’s world?
We’ve pulled back the curtains, now we’ve got to pull the rabbit out of the hat.
