Nancy Drew has been solving crimes and has made it look as easy as blueberry pie for over ninety years, having first hit the sleuthing scene back in 1930s The Secret of the Old Clock. For all of those decades, this demure and intelligent gal has inspired throngs of people to pick up her series of books and work alongside her as she works furtively on solving such cases like The Hidden Staircase, The Mystery at Lilac Inn, The Clue in the Diary and The Sign of the Twisted Candles. Of course, enterprising gumshoe that she is, even super-detectives need a helping hand every now and again and, accordingly, such a creature does exist and is ready to spell Ms. Drew during off-season in the form of spinoff series Tom Swift. How do we know this? Was it an exacting and precise examination of a crime scene, or perhaps a deep-dive into past cases to arrive at our conclusions? Oh, Dear and Constant Reader, don’t give me that much credit; our benevolent benefactors over at the Edward Stratemeyer-admiring Hollywood Reporter clued us in to this latest bit of Nancy Drew drama…
Coming our way from the current TV home of Nancy Drew – the CW – comes news today that a spinoff series starring Tian Richards entitled Tom Swift will be putting together hunches and clues for all of us at home to follow along with.
For those who missed a page or two during childhood, Tom Swift was the central character in six juvenile science fiction books during the early days of the 20th Century. In the new series, Tom has been retrofitted for this new age and been reimagined as an African American, gay billionaire who sets out on a quest to uncover the truth behind his missing father even as he grapples with making sense of the bevy of supernatural wonders he must sift through with each episode. Tian Richards brought the character of Swift to life in the Nancy Drew series, and he will be reprising the role for the spinoff.
The fingerprints of the Nancy Drew television gurus is all over Tom Swift: Showrunner Melinda Hsu Taylor and series creators Noga Landau, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are all present and accounted for, guaranteeing more than superficial connectivity between Drew and Swift as the spinoff gets set to premiere.
And speaking of premieres, no official word from up on high as of yet as to when we can expect Tom Swift to drop, but smart money has it for early 2022.
