Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi Guys, we’ve been great thanks! Slowly getting used to the world opening back up but Live music is back and we’re buzzing haha

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Mirror Mirror”?

Absolutely, it’s a bit of a different vibe to our last couple of songs, it’s a lot more upbeat and from a songwriting perspective it’s one we’ve worked a lot more collaboratively on! It’s a song about not taking yourself too seriously on social media but most importantly, it’s a chance to sing along with an arctic monkeys-esque vocal at the chorus and who in their right mind wouldn’t want that…

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

There was a story I’d heard of an Instagram model/influencer and how unhappy they were in the background, really struggling with how they felt and low on self confidence but from social media it was honestly as if life was more than rosy, everything was perfect and it kind of just struck a chord with me. I reckon social media can actually be a really useful tool in meeting and engaging with like minded people but there is this dark fake side to it and I think that’s the best way to sum up what the song is about – don’t get sucked in!

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

While the world getting back to normal is a wonderful thing… it’s also made it really hard to get stuff like video shoots organized in a timely manner haha We were conscious we’d maybe have to wait for ages to get it released while we waited on the video so we decided to plug on and get it out, now we just need to beg, borrow or steal a camera to get the video done!

How was the recording and writing process?

The Writing/Recording process for this song was a bit different to usual, I always create the demos in my home studio, we then take that as a band and refine it to the point we’re happy enough to go record it. We recorded the majority of the stems with Mark Morrow Audio in Edinburgh and after sitting on it for a while, not entirely happy with the chorus, we called in our friend Adam Warrington (YUNGBLUD’s unbelievably talented guitarist) who helped produce/mix the song as he’s worked with some of the top producers in the world and it was brilliant to see how far the song came from us all pushing out what we thought was possible!

What role does Scotland play in your music?

Scotland is huge for us, there’s so many new bands coming through and I think the general scene itself is so welcoming, like we’re all looking out for each other. I think because of that from a songwriting and production point of view nothings off the table, we’re all up for giving a leg up where possible and always intrigued for a bit of collaboration.

How has Arctic Monkeys and Gorillaz influence your writing?

Gorillaz are a massive part of what we do as a band, they’re single handedly our biggest influence as a group with the way they almost genre hop as and when they fancy it, that and the hip hop roots which is where we found ourselves evolving from. We’re also really keen to work alongside some hip hop artists so watch this space. For this song, Arctic Monkeys had a huge part in the chorus too but I think that was us clinging to our indie side, we’re never wanting to break free from that haha

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

We’re always writing and recording! Our main aim is to have at least another release out by the end of this year, then we can shift our focus to something even bigger… watch this space!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I think if I told you that our own Eddie Van Halen and de facto manager Zach might come and hunt me down as I always get the date wrong or I say the wrong name haha you’ll just need to follow us on Instagram/Twitter or you can even join the mailing list for some inside secrets of the Regime.

What else is happening next in Dictator’s world?

We’re buzzing to be finally back playing, we’ve our first ever Glasgow headline at Broadcast 18th December and we’d absolutely love to see you all there, even if it’s not your cup of tea – just buy your ticket so I can get my patio done, we might even buy you a pint!
