INTERVIEW: Enigmatic animal-mask-clad folk-horror band Ghosts of Torrez

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, we are all good thanks. Hope you are well and keeping safe.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Return”?

Nick: The Return came about as a happy accident. We had been planning to get together to properly record some of the demo’s that we had put together over the years, but due to the pandemic we had to put this off until we could get the three of us together.

During the lockdown I purchased a new synth to try and drum machine for our studio and when Rob (guitarist / voc’s) came over, I started showing him a few things the synth can do and he started to jam along to an arpeggiated pattern I was mucking about with. Eliot (lead guitar) then started playing along and the song came together, just like that.

We were going to add a vocal but after a week’s rest, when we came back to it, we thought that the song flowed so well as an instrumental, that we would just leave it as it was.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

As this was being all put together towards the tale end of the lockdown, we didn’t really have chance to get together to do a video as a band, so we had to fall back on stock footage and came up with a kind of eco narrative video, that seemed to fit with the atmosphere of the song.

How was the recording and writing process?

We’ve always had a very organic way of approaching writing songs; they generally start as a jam and then morph into something from there. We used to be a duo and due more to the limitations of it just being the two of us, the songs had more of a folk feel to them. Adding Eliot to the mix has meant that I could switch to keyboards, synth and drum programming, which has added a lot more depth to our songs.

Does the new single mean we can expect an album– how’s that coming along?

We are currently looking at what we can do with the songs we’ve written over the years and how we plan to orchestrate those. This is dependent on how they work in the studio. We currently have a kind of psych / folk feel to most of the songs, however I am currently learning the trumpet … so anything could happen!!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

It’s all currently up in the air, but we do hope to have a full release for 2022. We are planning to cover ‘It’s Halloween’ by The Shaggs for an October release .. so, watch this space.

What else is happening next in Ghosts of Torrez’s world?

At the moment it’s trying to make up for lost time. We had planned to have all this wrapped up by now, however we’ve only just got things moving, so all further plans (apart from the Shaggs cover) will be coming into fruition in 2022.
