UK house duo Versus land on Ultra Music with Turn Me Out: a stunning new version of the much-loved club classic set to further establish them as a force to be reckoned with.
Versus are Dave Skehan and Scott Walker an electronic duo who have been blazing a trail through the UK club scene and beyond. A partnership forged over several years, their chemistry both in the studio and when performing live is electric. Following performances at The Warehouse Project, Ministry of Sound, and their own sell-out Versus & Friends parties over the last few years, they’re hotly tipped by some of House music’s most influential figures.
Versus’s sound is rooted in classic house and rave culture, with tracks ranging from hypnotic warehouse rollers like 2019’s Lick It to soaring mainroom anthems in the vein of 2020’s Afraid in collaboration Dissolut and Nicola Green. With previous releases landing on storied imprints such as Armada, Under No Illusion, SOLA and Realm, they now make their Ultra Music debut with the huge Turn Me Out – a slamming reinterpretation of the Praxis/Kathy Brown club classic.
How have you been?
Scott: Really good thanks.
Dave: Apart from adding a couple of pounds during lockdown I’m good, thanks for asking.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single Turn Me Out? What made you want to remake this song?
Scott: it was pure chance really, we had the beat finished and were looking for vocal for it. Dave found the acapella and fit perfect with the track, it was a match made in heaven.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Dave: we have a cool lyric video coming, who knows…maybe if the tune does well enough.
How was the recording and re-writing process?
Scott: The whole track came together really quick, once we layered the acapella it was done in four hours (but not every tune is this quick).
What was it like to work with Kathy Brown and how did that relationship develop? How much did she get to influence the song?
Dave: Once we finished the tune, we sent it to management who reached out to Kathy Browns team, they liked it and surprisingly agreed to clear the vocal. Unfortunately we haven’t actually met her yet but I’m sure we will bump into her soon, she was in the US at the time when we made the track.
What role does the UK play in your music?
Scott: The UK sound is heavily influenced us…growing up here we’ve been influenced by D&B, Speed Garage, Oldskool, UK Garage , Hard dance and the explosion of the acid house in our city Manchester. The UK has always been a rich melting pot of different styles of underground music. So it’s been easy over the years TJ dip in and have access to them as certain genres become popular.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Dave: Absolutely….during the lockdown we’ve used this time very wisely, pretty much lived in the studio, a lot is coming.
What else is happening next in VERSUS’ world?
Scott: we’re playing Higher stage at Sundown Festival with Solardo, Eli Brown, Franky Wah, Sosa. We’re playing Dubrovnik Croatia. Plus some other stuff we can’t announce yet.
