Hi Tay, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Yeah, well thank you!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Garden Song”?
Garden Song is I guess my first official release? I usually aim to write songs that have emotional depth, but are fun at the same time, hopefully that comes across in the tune.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Garden Song is about the night that my grandfather died, but it’s also a celebration of the connection that we shared.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Currently no, there were plans however my animator contracted COVID a few months back, which threw a spanner in the works.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was good! I actually wrote the song about 8 years ago? I actually entirely forgot about it, dug it out for gigs a few years back and decided to record it on a whim. Glad that I did!
What role does Brisbane play in your music?
This is a great question! I don’t know that Brisbane plays any specific role in my music, however, there are tunes that I feel contain that ‘having a beer at the end of a humid day’ vibe. That might just be an Australian influence, but regardless, it’s in there.
How has First Aid Kit and Paul Kelly influenced your writing?
First Aid Kit only really came about as a reference half a year ago. However, Paul Kelly has been a long term influence. He has this incredible way of telling stories in a uniquely Australian way. I feel like I’ve pulled this term out of thin air, but for me his lyrics are in some way connected to a long linage of Australian narrative folk. There are so many colonial songs that contain day to day details of people’s lives, feelings, the weather, their longings for England and the lives they left behind, I can see how he taps into that long history of telling Australian folk stories. Hopefully my music has this same story telling feel as well.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yep for sure! I have a new song coming out on the 23rd of August and recording is locked in for September, so there should be a fair few more released after that!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’m releasing a song called ‘Wasted on You’ on August 23. It’s about playing alone to a empty room at 2am, but also regrets.
What else is happening next in Interstellar Tay’s world?
Mostly just holding my breath that the NSW borders re-open so I can get back into the studio. I’m super excited about the next few songs I’ve got coming.
