On June 18, a sudden and ill-informed action was taken by Texas. Government Greg Abbott. This action jeopardized the wellbeing and pay of more than 2 thousand workers, my son being one of those employees. Keep in mind that the legislative staff from both sides of the aisle are part of this dilemma. They serve lawmakers. Before getting into the main key elements, allow me to tell you about the story’s most significant and prominent character.
Donovon Rodriguez’s mindset from the start was to offer his support to the public. Not only because it was the most honorable way to work, but it was also part of his legacy. Another factor why Donovon was so assured of his convictions in public service was his grandmother’s dedication to community and her service as a government employee and union member. During his childhood, he had witnessed his grandmother working in two major public organizations. She dedicated her knowledge to the Department of Health and Human Services and the Telephone Reporting Unit for the Corpus Christi Police Department. Donovon proud of his grandmother and satisfied with the correlation of work he shared with her, but on June 18, the government Vetoed Article X and the uncertainty settled in.
Essentially, Article X under the Texas Governor’s appropriation bill included funding to the community agencies, support staff and the legislature for the balance of the year. The total worth of this bill came in at 410.4 million dollars. Then the Governor’s action transpired as a result of the Democratic House member walk-out to break quorum on the Voting Rights Bill. Intended as a lesson to all the democratic members for taking such a bold move.
The entire situation continues to be a sad state of affairs for all of the 2K employees, including the cafeteria people, maintenance staff, IT and many others. Donovon did his best by taking action to do everything signing the petition to restore the Article X funding so that the employees’ salaries would be set back to the routine. After all was said Donovon stood his ground and ended up being the only member in Bexar Country to join the lawsuit in progress.
Donovon Rodriguez sought assistance and support from the Texas Employees Union. His actions continue to be encouraged by fellow union members. Donovon said, “I at least felt that I have done something better for all the employees,” he continued by saying, “some of my colleagues will be in poor condition, and they are suffering from mental and physical breakdowns.”
As the COVID variant continues to aggressively move through south Texas and the Democratic members resist the call to return to the second Special Session all two thousand support staff may have to continue to watch the preverbal can being kicked down the road or at least until our legislators can come together for the betterment of the people.
