INTERVIEW: Savage Ocean

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Doing great! Thanks for having us Vents!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Free Yourself”?

The main body of the music for Free Yourself was a groove(drums & strings) that was recorded in 1986 and in 2020 the groove was looped and bass, guitars, synthesizers, additional drums were added as well as lyrics written and recorded.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The lyrics were inspired by seeing people’s circumstances such as homelessness, lack of resources, self doubt etc….

One of our missions is to uplift and inspire through music.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Filming the video was a learning process. It was done to give a natural and organic vibe.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process is easy for us. D. Lorenzo pretty much creates and records all of the music and then he, Regina Woods and D.Thompson create the lyrics, melodies and harmonies.

What role does Minneapolis play in your music?

In the 1980’s the so-called Minneapolis sound was dominating the airwaves mainly propelled by Prince & company. Many artists from rock, r&b, punk, soul and pop wanted that kind of new wave funky rock edge to their music. It’s ironic because Prince was inspired by Larry Graham(Graham Central Station), Sly & The Family Stone, Tower Of Power and George Duke who are all from the SF Bay Area which is where Savage Ocean is from.

How has Prince and Earth Wind and Fire influenced your writing?

Growing up as young musicians in the 1970s-80s we all aspired to have the unorthodox musical freedom of Prince and the polished dynamic structure and lyrical content of EWF.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes we have new music ready and on deck. We are looking to release the next single in Oct 2021.

What else is happening next in Savage Ocean’s world?

We are currently rehearsing our 6 piece band Drums, Bass, Guitar, Percussion, Keyboards & Lead Vocals. We are focusing on our original music to perform as well as some tasty covers. We also have an upcoming photo shoot with the full band members included. And we are doing a few local performances and really looking at the last quarter Oct, Nov, Dec of 2021 to step up our performances.
