Ethan Hawke Set to Be Recognized With Lifetime Achievement Award from 55th Annual Karlovy Vary Film Festival

They say that you’re never as big in your own hometown as you are anywhere else in the world, and while the specifics of that old bromide may not be entirely the case with Oscar nominated actor Ethan Hawke, it is telling that the Explorers star has been officially announced as the upcoming recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Honor in the Czech Republic’s 55th annual Karlovy Vary Film Festival. This leaves Hawke aficionados here in his own home country (including this intrepid scribbler of words) alternately happy for his recognition elsewhere, and frustrated that most of the film festival circuits and awards shows in the U.S. aren’t following the example of our Overseas cousins.

Ethan Hawke hit the ground running with his celebrated film career by sharing screen time with movie legend River Phoenix in Joe Dante’s 1985 sci-fi adventure flick The Explorers. From there it was on to bigger and better things with a breakthrough performance in Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society, followed up by a slew of other films – some great (Linklater’s Before films), some pretty decent (A Midnight Clear, Floundering) and some downright awful (Mystery Date, anyone?). Through it all, Hawke has been a solid and steady presence, a salient point which, to date, has earned him four Oscar nominations and a legion of fans.

The above, and being an accomplished novelist, director, and screenwriter, has earned him the respect of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, according to our Tape fanatics over at The Hollywood Reporter, who report today that the 55th iteration of the festival has seen fit to bestow upon this accomplished thespian the 2021 President’s Award (also known as a Lifetime Achievement Honor).

Karlovy Vary’s Artistic Director Karel Och said in a press release announcing the honor that, “We are thrilled to welcome to Karlovy Vary an artist we’ve been admiring for a long time. In 2018, KVIFF paid tribute to the Austin Film Society and it is exciting to extend our appreciation of this renowned organization’s work by honoring an actor and director who is so closely connected to the Texas independent film scene.”

Man of the Hour himself Ethan Hawke is set to attend this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival which will take place over August 20-28.

Vents – tremendous admirers of Mr. Hawke’s – extend our own sincere congrats for this well-deserved recognition.
